Since she was playing a character based on Judy Garland, I guess they felt the need to dub her in the released film. I've restored her own voice.
Based on the amount of editing involved, I don't believe she filmed to her own track, tho.

Fascinating! The orchestration is very different too.
And she didn't do the key change.
Thanks for sharing it.

Patty recorded at least a couple of fairly successful albums at the time of her TV show -- very much in the early Hayley Mills mold.
I was always surprised she never did a Broadway musical in a starring role ... she easily had more vocal chops than a lot of the ladies who have done it.
Patty never recorded any pre-recorded tracks for VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. That track comes from her multi-Grammy Award winning album PATTY DUKE Sings Songs From VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and Other Selections -- where she recorded all of the songs from the film plus some other deliciously painful ditties.
Patty starring in a musical on Broadway? Oy!
She could barely hold pitch (and sometimes couldn't). She had a big loud straight tone.
That's not singing, that's "sustained talking."
Not exactly something I'd want to pay top dollar to hear.
It's one thing if she'd croaked her way through shows like Channing or Bacall, or talk-sang like Harrison or Preston...
...but poor Patty belted it out to the rafters!
God help us all.
All I can say is WOW WOW WOW!!!
You mixed that so well. I used to watch the movie on video (with the sound off) & play Patty's album but the speed was different & would go waaayyy off track. That is just amazing, and YOU are amazing Marknyc
Thank you soooo much for making that & sharing it with us... especially on a day when I'm soooo sad XANADU is closing.
PS: Patty will be in NJ next month and I WILL be there...

That was an awesome reunion albeit too short. I could have watched them for the whole hour.

"You'll raise a lot of money for us."
Uh-huh.
For those interested, Gail Heiderman dubbed the vocals for Patty Duke in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Her vocals are on the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack as well.
Margaret Whiting dubbed the vocals for Susan Hayward for the "I'll Plant My Own Tree" number.

Now I see why she was dubbed.
Yes, BrodyFosse123, I knew this was not a pre-record, and said on the youtube page that Patty did not film to this track. I also credited Gail.
Heeeeres Judy!
Trying to put something--anything!--into "Plant My Own Tree" to make it work
maybe i missed something...i thought the Garland connection was that she was set to play Helen Lawson, but Susan Hayward ended up doing so. Has Susann said Neely was based on Garland too? or other writers of the screenplay?
wow Garland looked frail in those wardrobe tests....the thinnest i've ever seen recorded.
I haven't seen that movie in eons!
What about Beyond the Valley of the Dolls?
From what I understand, the character of Neely O'Hara is loosely based on Garland, and Helen Lawson is based on Ethel Merman.
However... the Broadway show incident in question where Helen demands that they cut Neely's song out, basically demoting her to not much more than a bit part...
That was "Panama Hattie."
Ethel was indeed the lead, and the bright new star who lost her big showstopping number?
Betty Hutton
By the way... Panama Hattie gave Ethel Merman a LOT of reasons to be nervous.
In addition to Betty Hutton, the future film "Annie Oakley," who ruffled Merman's feathers, she also had Vera-Ellen, Betsy Blair, Lucille Bremer and June Alyson in the chorus.
Lordy!
I would find it hard to stop looking all around the stage in that company.
Yes... Judy Garland was the first to be cast as Helen Lawson (footage of Judy sitting next to the book's author Jacqueline Susann can be seen on the 2-disc DVD). Judy filmed a few days before being fired (per Patty Duke, Judy refused to go onto the set unless the director escorted her personally). She was quickly fired and replaced by Susan Hayward and all that survives of Judy's time on VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is the footage of her peculiar costume and wig screen tests and the recording of her playback track for "I'll Plant My Own Tree". She DID keep her gold beaded pantsuit costume and later wore it endlessly on her final concert appearances.
Though it was never publicly revealed, many sources knew that Neely O'Hara was based on Judy Garland and Helen Lawson on Ethel Merman. Anyone familiar with Jacqueline Susann's history and background with La Merman weren't surprised by the Helen Lawson character in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.
Jacqueline Susann and Judy Garland at the 1967 press conference announcing Judy's casting in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS:

the fact that some record producer actually shelved out money to book studio time to record that idiotic piece of garbage is beyond me.
what the fvck where they thinking letting her commit that horrid, horrid singing voice to vinyl?
and to think that people actually bought that piece of crap back in 1967 and listened to it.
there is no accounting for taste.
my ears are BLEEDING!!!!
What was the background information of the relationship between Jacqueline Susann and Ethel Merman? Come on and dish out the dirt.
several sources claim that (a) they were in a relationship or (b) that jackie was a crazed, obsessed fan who was enamored of la merm and stalked her every chance she got.
pick one and let your imagination run away with you.
Wow the interview from THE VIEW was sort of fascinating. I just saw this movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago at my boyfriend's insistence and I loved its over-the-topness. Patty Duke is great and to watch them actually talk about it... fantastic.
