I remember hearing Daphne Rubin-Vega sing "Without You" on the Rent cast recording not knowing who she or the show really was, and I was NOT impressed! Actually seeing her perform and understanding her role, I completely changed my mind.

On the other hand, I used to LOVE Julia Murney, and now her voice grates my nerves.

I wasn't too fond of Patti when I saw her in the Sweeney Todd concert (before I saw the revival) but I now love her in both Evita and Sweeney Todd.

I still think the performance in the concert sucks though.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

^ I agree. It's a hefty mix of screaming, shouting, and over-acting.

Same here. I still think she's an excellent actress, but her singing bugs me.

It took me some time to warm up and to Audra as well (but now I think she's great).

I understand that Patti is extremely talented, but I'm not the biggest fan of her's.

And I have an up and down relationship with DRV's voice. It took me a little while to get used to it and appreciate it, and then I thought she was great. However, lately, I'm not such a big fan anymore.

I was not an Audra fan by hearing her on cds but I saw her in person in Anyone Can Whistle and was blown away! I finally understood her hype
Same thing with Donna McKechnie, until I saw her turkey lurkey clip and saw Charlotte in ACL did I fully appreciate what Donna brought to that role and what a great dancer she is!

Initially, the entire cast of Rent left me cold. And now...

I'll admit I didn't care for Betty Buckley when I was younger. Her voice seemed grating to my little ears. Then I heard her sing on "Remember WENN" and I started to appreciate her. So, when I got to see her at the Broadway For Medicine concert in March, it was a great experience.

Conversely, I used to like Patti Lupone until I saw "Sweeney Todd" last year.
