Posted: 8/12/05 at 3:47pmAlright, who liked it, who didn't? did it do ALW's masterpiece justice?

Posted: 8/12/05 at 3:49pmI didn't care for either one really. I thought Minnie Driver was the best thing in that picture, if that clues you in to how I felt about it.

Agree with CARL MAGNUM not a mastepiece by any measure but who says entertainment needs to be. Phantom is a brilliant piece of hockum and makes for a great night out!

Posted: 8/12/05 at 3:59pmThe movie failed even to be entertaining hokum. It was badly paced, horribly acted, boringly designed, and DEAD.

I understand your question, but in context it makes no sense.
YOu said movie versus stage, who liked it? - Liked which? And did which do which justice?
But I understand.
Lastly, no, I don't think the POTO movie did JCS (his masterpiece) justice.

I hated the movie version... and I loved the stage version. I'm sure it was mainly due to the actors because I didn't like anyone in the movie but Patrick Wilson. The stage actors I saw were a lot more talented than the movie ones.

I agree. I think it is a powerful show and it takes a talented cast. I was not at all impressed with the movie. But, there they go again trying to turn Hollywood actors into performers. I didn't mean that I thought it was his masterpiece, or one at all for that matter. But everyone is referring to it as a masterpiece. I ment to put "__" around it. My bad! My personal favorites are Aspects of Love and Evita.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 4:19pmi, on the contrary, absolutely love the movie. granted, i have never seen the stage version, but i just love the movie. i own it, and i watch it all the time. in fact, i just watched it last night, haha. its my favorite movie. i don't really understand how any theatre person couldn't love that movie. but that's just me.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 4:20pmI hated the movie, the acting and singing was terrible, and to be honest, I am a huge fan of the show, but it really doesn't work on film, the movie bored me!!!!

Posted: 8/12/05 at 4:20pmGood visuals in the movie, but bad casting.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 4:23pmI don't consider it ALW's "masterpiece" considering the strongest components of the show are the set and the costumes. The show is so-so, but too repetitive and the second act drags horribly. The film just made it all worse. Minnie Driver was probably the only thing in the film worth salvaging.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 4:27pmI liked the movie when I first saw it b/c I hadn't seen the stage version yet and had nothing else to compare it to. Now that I've seent he stage version, I have to say that on stage is at least 10 times better than the movie!

Posted: 8/12/05 at 4:29pmi think both sucked! but that Emmy is the worst actress i have ever seen. So the movie is even worse!
#19re: Phantom--Movie vs Stage
Posted: 8/12/05 at 4:32pmI think the movie was beautifully filmed. I just think Patrick and Emmy look most of the time like they need an enema. And, personally, the source material isn't that great.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 5:42pmWell I'm in the minority here but I personally love the movie. I admit it had its faults, but I still love it. I think it's designed and shot gorgeously, and all I think is beautiful when I watch it. I'm a huge fan of the show as well, and appreciated the performances more than most, particularly Gerry(if it wasn't known or obvious). I love the music, and suspend reality for what's necessary but it really is one of my favorites.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 5:46pmThe one thing I see in favor of the way the movie was translated was that they didn't make major changes to the source (e.g., A Chorus Line). That would have totally destroyed the film.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 5:49pmBleh, I hated the movie. I like the stage version MUCH MUCH better.
#23re: Phantom--Movie vs Stage
Posted: 8/12/05 at 5:53pmNeither one was great but the stage show bored me to tears. If I had to choose I would favor the movie over the stage production.

Posted: 8/12/05 at 6:29pmSOME things in the movie were better, like Carlotta's character and the crashing of the chandelier. Otherwise, it was a bland film.
