"On Monday, Jan. 9, the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical -- with performance number 7,486 -- becomes the longest running show in Broadway history, surpassing another of the British composer's megahits, "Cats." And while statistics can be trotted out extolling the longevity and profitability of the production, it's the people, both on-stage and behind the scenes, who make the musical work at each performance.
"
I say this is 7000+ preformances too long.

Posted: 1/6/06 at 7:18pmThis does not deserve to be the longest running show.

Posted: 1/6/06 at 7:19pmI saw it when I was in NY in December. It lacked any enthusiasim, and bored most of the audience. No Energy at all. All the actors were bored. Its become an chore to preform rather than something they love.

You all are too picky.
I'm just satisfied that "Cats" isn't the longest-running show anymore.

Posted: 1/6/06 at 7:24pmWell as long as people go to see it, it will stay open. Whether or not it deserves to be, like it or not, it is for now going to be the longest show on Broadway.

Posted: 1/6/06 at 7:25pmI think its sad that a show that has become such a lackluster production will be celebrated for its greatness.

Gee whiz, am I the only one who is actually GLAD that this show is going to be the longest running show on Broadway? Good God! We should be content that the longest running show isn't that piece of crap CATS anymore...

I was kidding. I agree that the production should have closed long ago, even though I like the show, it's just that I'd think that anyone would jump for joy when Cats gets replaced.

Well said, Piazza
To have CATS as the longest running show. Sends shivers down ( or up) your spine

I happen to really dislike POTO and care nothing about CATS.
Excuse my cliche, but quality, not quantity!

Since it has been running for so long, there must be enough merit for people to see it, see it again & tell their friends - all over the world
We happened to enjoy it immensely but to each his own

Awww... I'm glad that POTO has come this far. You've got to commend them for running for so long...it's a rather difficult feat to accomplish. Besides, I'm sure that the production has inspired many people (including myself) at one point or another. So congrats POTO! :)

Phantom of the Opera is a great show with amazing music and a great story to tell. It is well deserved to be the longest running show. ANd like Broadway Baby 81 said, this show has inspired a lot of people, including myself, to get into Broadway Musicals.
And I don't know what you are talking about Defying EDCT. I saw the show on the 28th, and it was the best production of it I have seen to this date, and I've seen it 8 times. The production was so tight and polished, and the actors were great in their roles. Mcgillian blew everyone away, and he got a loud ovation at the end of the show. Everyone loved the show and there was a LOT of energy.

I agree with the others who said that if the public sees shows like this, chances are that they'll want to be into more Broadway musicals. Isn't that what we're striving for? Heck, this show was THE show that got me into Broadway, and now i'm a Sondheim Fan (SITP or Sweeney todd is my favourite) and a fan of The Light in the Piazza (See my user name, DUH!) and many other shows as well. If it weren't for this show, we wouldn't have as many theatre fans. I wouldn't be on this board.
Although, when I saw the show for the second time in July, it lacked a certain... OOMPH! to it. I still enjoyed seeing it, and will see it again once the closing date's announced.

Posted: 1/6/06 at 10:55pmThis show brought me into the world of musical theater and has kept me there enough to want to be apart of it for the rest of my life. If a show is powerful enough to stay on Broadway we should be happy for it and not shooting it down. The fact that it has the staying power that it does proves that theater is not a dying art. Be happy that people go to see shows and not so quick to give your all-encompassing judgment on it.

Posted: 1/6/06 at 11:02pmevery year, the fifth grades across Buffalo (i know atleast in my district and a few others) would go on a trip up to Toronto to see it. kids you would expect to hate it loved it. it was a trip everyone looked forward to. for many it was their first exposure to a real broadway show. it's been closed for a while, but people still love it and it's popular when the tour comes here. i hope it still stays strong down there in nyc!
