Some time ago, I saw the Phantom of the Opera movie. There was something bout it, I did'nt like, but could'nt put my finger on it.

I watched it again yesterday, and realised what I did not like.

It was the end. I know not all movies can have happy endings, but why did they have Christine die. The end was sooo sad. Phantom of the Opera

But I loved the Masquerade Ball scenes.

She was old when she died... thats what you do when your old. You die.

The stage show's opening scene also hints that Christine is dead when the auction takes place. Raoul, now an old man, sings "... She often spoke of you, my friend,..." which hints that 'SHE' has passed away.

So in the movie they only took one more step down that path, actually showing her grave.

.......?

Even if they hadn't ended it with Raoul at Christine's grave, it still doesn't have the happiest ending. The Phantom's heart's desire gets crushed and he is sent into hiding again.... Not exactly the happiest ending.

What the hell did you want to happen?

There are A LOT of problems with this movie, but the "ending being sad" is certainly not one of them.

She was old when she died... thats what you do when your old. You die.

And apparently, if you're Christine Daae, you go up the social ladder. (If you don't know what I mean, remember that Raoul is a viscount. Check that against her title on her headstone.)

Being called "Christine de Chagny" is very interesting.

In THE PHANTOM OF MANHATTAN, Frederick Forsyth's continuation of the musical (a novella that is now out of print: which Lloyd Webber was developing before The Beautiful Game), Christine marries Raoul and has a child. Pierre de Chagny.

He turns out to be the "Son of the Phantom" and entails a long melodramatic series of actions in New York, as Christine becomes a world-wide opera star, pursued by the Phantom once more (this time he wants to raise his son!). It's a weird book, not very well written, but imagine what Lloyd Webber would have done with it.

From the top of my head, Lloyd Webber wrote one song for the sequel of PHANTOM, with lyrics like:

The heart is slow to learn
The heart is slow to learn
These feelings that I feel
Are foolish but they're real

I'd be wiser yet to see
This love can never be
And each day is like the last
When living in the past

I know it's sad
And you won't return
But yet, as I have said,
The heart is slow to learn

I never loved...
As I have loved you
Why is love cruel?
I wish I knew

Say what you will
It doesn't matter!
Until I die
There's only you...

Until I die
There's only you...

Andrew recycled the melody as "Our Kind of Love" in The Beautiful Game. Pity. Sequels haven;'t been successful, but any bet if this were staged it would have been HUGE. Perhaps more successful if it debuted as a movie.
