All of the actors lip-synched their OWN vocals, except Minnie Driver as Carlotta, who lip-synched the vocals of Margaret Preece.
I just realized that Emmy Rossum is not qualified (vocally) to play Christine. She did a great job in the film, don't get me wrong, but the music was altered for her during the title song. In the actual version, there is a key change during the part "In all your fantasies, you always knew...", which continues through the rest of the song including the vocalizing at the end. But in the film version, that one verse was cut, in turn eliminating the key change, keeping the vocalizing at the end down a key or two, so she doesn't sing the high C at the end.
I couldn't believe I didn't recognize this until just recently. I feel dumb.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 9:04pmAll actors do voice overs in musical movies...even in Chicago. They prerecord it. I too loved the movie, I thought it was beautiful. I didnt really like Gerard Butler until I saw him in it. They were all great. But yeah, even in the old 50's and 60's musical movies they all did voice overs

Posted: 2/5/05 at 9:32pmThe elimination of the fourth verse in the title song in the PHANTOM film did not result in that drastic a key change. While stage Christines sing a high E natural at the end of the title song, Emmy sang just a half step below that, which is an E-flat/D sharp, a note that is still somewhat up in the stratosphere. Emmy's vocal technique will improve with further training. I think that for someone who was 16/17 years old at the time of filming and recording the score, she did a great job.

Yes, the vocals are pre-recorded in a studio so that the sound engineers can mix the music, nat sound (natural sound), and vocal(s) together. This also allows for processing to be added to the performer's voice.
Most of the movie is not shot in sequence. The video and the audio are pieced together in the final editing process. If the performer had to sing the song on set, it would be nearly impossible to shoot some of the scenes. Plus, it would sound horrible.

::forgets name of movie::
But Barabara Streisand did a movie in which she actually sang - they didn't use voiceovers...

I enjoyed the movie emensley, even Butler.
I thought Rossum, Butler, and Wilson were brilliant with their acting and vocals, and Minnie Driver was hilarious.
Joshua, you sure about that? The high C at the end? In the original, it's an E, not a C. Do you mean she sang a C? Although I thought with the elimination of the last verse it would have put the final note at a D ... but I'm not too familiar with the music.

Oh, I'm sorry! I have the sheet music right in front of me... I just misread the note. Oops!
Thank you!
Barbra Streisand sang live vocals in YENTL and FUNNY GIRL, I believe. DON'T QUOTE ME ON IT!! On her episode of INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO, she commented on how she wasn't comfortable with lip-synching to pre-recorded vocals because when she acts, her emotions aren't pre-planned, which would then affect how she would sing the song. So she opted to sing the vocals live.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 10:19pmYou're right, Ms. "shoot me from my left side only" Steisand does claim to have sung her vocals "straight to tape." She is probably the exception to the rule. Other than that, it just doesn't happen in movie-land, and as a viewer, you wouldn't want it to.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 10:27pmhuh? Elphiesbiggestfan, the only singing voice dubbed in The Phantom of the Opera film was Minnie Driver's.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 10:29pmWishIHadaTony... She was asking about lip-singing in the movie. All sang their own vocal track to use to lip-sing in the movie. Mini Driver did not record her own vocals.

there's no such thing as "Lip-Sing". you guys mean LIP SYNCH.
it's when you move your lips in synch to pre-recorded vocals.
just because someone lip synchs it doesn't necesarily mean they did not sing. they could actually be lip synching to their own pre-recorded voice.
the process is usually used in motion pictures, but is also used on the stage, especially when there is a number with alot of choreography involved.
when a performer didn't perform a song and they lip synch to someone elses' voice then that's called dubbing.
in some dubbing cases a perfromer may have lip synched to their own track and then at the last minute the producer doesn't like the performance so he goes out and hires another singer to come in and record (in a studio) over the pre-existing vocals.

Save for Emmy Rossum, I hated every minute of it.
Go see "Hotel Rwanda" instead!

Minnie Driver was the best part of Phantom....
The voices looked terribly off from the mouth movements....
