Phantom of the Opera movie coming this Christmas!!!

I can't wait!!! I hope it's good. I saw the trailer for it on www.movies.go.com it was awesome!! The truth is I have never seen POTO, so I showed my mom,who has seen it and loved it, the trailer and she promised that she would take me to the show before the movie comes out. I was never really interested b/c I never thought I could see a show with only singing and no dialogue, but after seeing RENT I think I'm ready for the "Opera".

Question: Can Minnie Driver sing? B/C shes in the cast.

Monkey--lemme tell ya... If he was your lover, you'd know that his name is ERIK and not the Phantom and you would call him that and kill anyone who refuses to believe it.

Sorry to be so harsh. I love that tragic man as well. In all his incarnations. I'm just so PISSED OFF that ALW wouldn't even give him a BLOODY NAME!!!

Ahem. Are you saying that the PHANTOM is EVIL?! He is in NO INCARNATION EVIL. We all love a little bad in our men, don't we? But he's not like... BIN LADEN evil! He's ERIK! With or without a name, that's who he is! Ah!

Sorry, ten minutes ago I literally had Phantom by Susan Kay in my hand and I was reading (my favorite part) the Persia chapters. Siiiiiigh. I just love him. Desperately. If only they could make a movie of that version... "How lightly you speak of forgetting--you, who have never known the filth and degredation of a cage!!" siiigh.

I just get very upset about ALW not giving him a name. It's all he has in the world, really, his name. "It's true Christine, I am not a ghost, nor an Angel--I am ERIK!" siiigh. How I do love this story...

Minnie Driver is dubbed in the film. I don't like that...it makes it less authentic.

Also, check out Phantomfans.net. Check out the thread "sound clips" in the Andrew Lloyd Webber's POTO section, and somewhere between page 30-44 you will find Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson singing "All I Ask of You."

Aw, come on. Many of the finest movie musicals, from West Side Story to My Fair Lady, were filled with dubbed characters. Even, interestingly, when the actors themselves could sing.

Minnie Driver plays Carlotta, an opera singer.

She's not Carlotta! Carlotta's a big, fat, uuughly woman! I have nothing against Minnie, I just wish there were more Broadway actors in that movie. I loved her in An Ideal Husband.

I am leaving you with a paragraph from Phantom (can I do this? Ah well...). I LOVE IT! (those other quotes I said I had memorized, but this I am reading from the book hehe)

"My mouth dropped open in astonishment, for nothing in his grim and austere appearance had prepared me for his voice. Even in that cold, clipped comment its astonishing beauty was quite unmistakable. Only those who heard him speak and sing will ever know just what a voice could be, for it was necessary to hear the extraordinary resonance and depth of timbre to truly understand the magnitude of his power. I never expected to heard such a voice outside paradise."

Sigh. I love Erik. And Nadir (the man speaking, for those who aren't up on their Susan Kay).

Ah, but indeed, she is Carlotta in the movie.

re: Phantom of the Opera movie coming this Christmas!!!

In the past three days I have seen Dracula, Avenue Q and After the Fall. For one brief moment Peter Krause knew my name. Tomorrow night (tonight, actually, because it is 1:25) I am going to get very drunk with friends I haven't seen all summer and on Monday I am seeing John Tartaglia at Joe's Pub. I am BURSTING with excitement. Sorry if it annoys you. I can't help it.

Actually, I'm taking that back. I'm not sorry. Just if it annoys you, *shrug*

re: Phantom of the Opera movie coming this Christmas!!!

First of all Minnie Driver plays Carlotta in the movie.

Second, she's not COMPLETELY DUBBED, only the higher notes.

Minnie Driver CAN SING.

Just needed to clear that up.

As you were...

In films, they can do pretty much anything they want, I believe, with the sound. Although most of the actors are able to do their own singing, we'll probably never know for sure how much is them and how much is "Memorex."

For info on the film and for sound clips (including Patrick Wilson and Emmy Rossum singing "All I Ask Of You")visit:

New York City Premiere Gala will be on Sunday December 12, I believe.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

I love the look of this movie and the sound sounds great on the teaser. However, if it is JUST like the show, i will be greatly disapointed because POTO the broadway show is far from my favorite. However, so far, so good.
