"Phantom" special edition DVD
"Phantom" special edition DVD#0
Posted: 5/6/05 at 12:50pmI was hoping my video store would have the special edition "Phantom of the Opera" DVD, but it didn't. I was wanting to see the behind-the-scenes special on the Broadway production. For those of you who have seen it, is the special edition DVD worth buying just for that particular feature?

I love the special features!! Actually I have a question to ask for those who have the double disks-
Who is the cast in the "Behind the Mask" special features DVD?

Yes it's totally worth it! It's a great "behind-the-scenes" look at the show with some information I had never heard before.
I'm not sure which cast it is, I was assuming it was one of the current companies.

I was a little dissapointed with the DVD special features. The thing doesn't even come with a chapter insert or anything. The WB really skimped on the US DVD release. Why do I see a "Super Deluxe Special Edition" coming out around Christmas? And why do I see myself buying it?
One thing I noticed it how much better the audio sounds on the DVD. Emmy and Gerry sound a ton better on the DVD than they do on the soundtrack recording. It threw me off at first because I kept thinking they had cleaned up the audio. Someone mentioned that they used a pretty inferior recording method for the soundtrack so that may explain it.
Also, for some reason the lipsynching being off also seems to be more noticeable on the DVD. The picture quality is also not that great. I mean it's good but nowhere near as crisp as the picture transfers for "The Incredibles" or "Star Wars".

In the credits of the feature, it says the cast shown was from the London Company in 2004.
I thought behind the mask was great, and others seemed to think it was worth the price of the whole DVD. If you're a fan of the stage show, I certainly think it's worth it, seeing some scenes and just learning a lot about the creation. The movie feature was okay, I wish they could have spent more time on that. And I'm still trying to access the DVD-rom features, so far no luck with 4 different computers...grrrrr.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 4:50pmI've only watched half of it, and I already thought it was worth it. It has commentary by ALW, Hal Prince, and Cameron Macintosh. It's great.

Yeah...it was the London POTO 2004 cast with John Owen Jones, Katie Knight-Adams (I think) and Ramin Karimloo.
I loved the special features! Probably more valuable that the movie itself since it shows clips of the stage show and behind the scenes stuff. :)
