Dreamcatcher, in response to your comment...Korea does have sporadic weeks when they perform Rent, usually once a year, for about a month.
Anyways, I was lucky to see it when I was there last year. It wasn't extremely popular, but it was such a good show, much better than I thought it would be! I went to the matinee show, and it was about 80% filled. I brought along my friend, who didn't speak Korean so I sat there and whispered and translated the whole thing for him! Ahaha. It was okay, since no one was behind us. It was his first time, and the whole thing was Korean. I was just so amazed by Angel; I thought that a drag queen was too liberal for Korea...but my doubts were laid to rest until the scene where Angel comes out in hospital scrubs, not in drag. (Angel was definitely a guy).
The Maureen I saw was the best Maureen ever; she was cracking everyone up in the audience, her "Over the Moon" was the best I'd ever seen. She pointed to a guy in the audience and asked him to moo...and he wouldn't, so his girlfriend mooed for him. It was hilarious! Maureen mooned the audience as well in "LVB", it was nice to see that the spirit of Rent was still there. (proven by the mooning. hahaha!)
The whole production stuck pretty close to what I'm used to in the States. I was very pleased; Mimi did such a great job in "Out Tonight", anyways, I could go on forever, it was a great show.
kangaroo, it's okay, I wouldn't have been offended or anything, but I can see where you're coming from.
And, yeah. It's not like there's racism at our drama department, but it's just that in theatre (musical or just plain old drama), you not only have to have the talent, but more importantly, you MUST look the part. Plays nowadays are a bit more flexible with ethnicity, but more older plays are a little bit more race specific. Usually caucasian, which makes it harder for minorities (especially Asians, because our features are so...obvious) to land some ginormous role.
Eww. And I just found a big jumble of spider guts on my carpet. Gross.
website to the newest incarnation of rent in korea. apparently this is the 3rd production to play there. lots of pics and video.

Hee hee. The guy who plays Mark is Kim Sae-Woo. That's the same phonetic pronounciation as "shrimp". :)
If you guys are wondering how to get to the clips, etc. Click on the 2nd link from the top on the right side bar. Music Numbers are the tracks. There aren't many videos. Just a commerical and some guy saying stuff. Gallery contains a BUNCH of pics.
And here's the link to the cast.

I was listening to the music tracks noticed there were a few translation errors, which is fine, but "You Okay Honey" is listed as "You Okay Home". It just made me laugh, because it still kinda makes sense, although it makes Angel seem a bit ghetto.
Seriously, I'm lovin' these tracks though. It's so weird to hear them in another language that you don't understand, but still recognizing what's being said.
"If Korean women can play Mimi there, why can't they play Mimi here? Sorry for the slight ramble, just had to get it out."
Did you consider the fact that there's a big difference between the ethnic diversity of the US and Korea?
I mean, think about the Finnish production of Miss Saigon, also... (and yes, there was one)
Since we are on the topic of foreign productions, here are a few pics of a production of Cabaret that played in Manila last year. It starred Monique Wilson (Lea Salonga's original alternate in Miss Saigon-London) as Sally Bowles.

Actually, I don't believe Angel is a male...Look at the hands.
There are fine-boned men as well, with fine hands. I saw this production in person; trust me, angel is a guy, I didn't believe it till the scene when Angel comes out in hospital scrubs, not in drag.

Thanks IMsoHyper! I waited for a while and then it started playing yay! Today 4 U has been my favorite. It is so funny! But why does Angel say "Today 4 U, Tommorrow 4 Me" at the beggining, but when he sings it, he doesn't say it. Weaird. But it was totally worth the wait. I am lsitening to Out Tonight now and it is so good!
Are they just audio clips? Cuz I'm listening to them, and they're cute, but I want vid's! :) hehe

Curtainpull, I'm sure the people of Korea reacted the same way as Americans do. It all depends on the person. Some may have just been appalled while others found it as something they could connect to. Just because it's another country doesn't mean that they're aliens or something. o.o;
