Thank you guys for your kind comments on The Civic. As a theatregoer and performer of Auckland I'm very blessed to have such a wonderful venue to enjoy the arts.

The Civic was opened in 1929 and is one of only seven "atmospheric" cinema/theatres remaining in the world. Atmospheric style architecture was developed by John Eberson (American) and uses a decor incorporating fantasies of the stage and sets, as well as real places around the world. Atmospheric theatres aim to take the patron to an imaginary land from the moment they step into the foyer. The Civic has Javan monuments, Indian collonades and exotic creatures, Buddhas, Victorian tiled roofs and Moorish spires and minarets. Of course, the auditorium also has the midnight blue southern sky with twinkling stars and clouds that pass overhead before the start of a show.

The Civic itself was designed by the architect team of Bohringer, Taylor and Johnson and was mostly completed by engineering teams from Melbourne. The theatre was built in 33 weeks.

Here are some more photos from theatres in Auckland. The first lot I took during a rehearsal for NZ Opera's La Traviata. Rehearsals were held at the St James Theatre, a beautiful old theatre, which is now (unfortunatly) used as a dance party venue.
