Pippin Question

I heard that the ending on the DVD of Pippin is different than the actual ending of the stage show. Can anyone tell me how it really ends??

Will have to check the DVD, but the talking head is definitely out.

In the original production, Pippin has a scene with a talking head of a soldier. It was just the head of the actor coming from a trapdoor in the front of the stage.

It's been so long since i saw either but was a song cut from the DVD? Or maybe they just freeze framed Pippin and his wife & Child and played the song over credits? IT/s been years.

The stage script ends with Pippin and his family alone, with all the lights and costumes gone and they exchange some pretty ambivilent words then I think Pippin says "THE END! TA DAAAAA!"

that is how the dvd ends
with the whole no clothes, costumes, sets, light, etc.
then he says the ta daaa thing

I could have sworn I heard the ending was different...
maybe I am just crazy :)

I don't know, but I'm sure I still wouldn't like pippin even if i saw the movie.
i saw it last week and it was TERRIBLE. maybe it's because its a high school, but i'm thinking it's more of the storyline.

I saw a middle school production and found the show/plot line/songs so terrible I left @ intermission

yeah. i thought that the end of the first act was the end, so i was like THANK GOD.

then it wasn't. and i died a little bit inside.

I think the DVD ending is something like "that's musical theater for you" and the stage show ends with Catherine asking how Pippin feels and he says that he's fulfilled. But I could be wrong.

The Broadway version and the DVD were performed without an intermission.

I seem to remember the difference as this: In one version, Catherine asks Pippin what he hopes for, and he says that things will just go on. In the other, he says that he hopes things will get better. It's a subtle difference. Fosse wanted the tragic ending, where Pippin says Life Sucks, but he was overruled at a later date, and Pippin says life should be like a musical comedy, and have a happy ending.

If I remember correctly, the happy ending won out.

Yes, Theo does sing "Corner of the Sky" a capella, at the very end of the show.

And if I recall correctly, after the verse, "Magic to Do" begins to play and he is led off with The Leading Player.

Ah, from wikipedia:
"Alternate Ending: The currently licensed edition of Pippin has a slightly different ending. After Pippin avers his contentment with a simple life with Catherine, Theo remains on stage and sings the chorus of "Corner of the Sky", after which the Leading Player and the troupe return to begin work on this new prospect. Current productions vary between the two possible endings."

So the ending with Theo is a current stage-show ending.

The Theo ending is optional for productions. The show usually ends with "Trapped, but happy. That's what you get in a musical comedy. Ta daaa." Or something to that effect.

In the hard cover printed script the ending is:
Catherine: Pippin...do you feel that you've compromised?
Pippin: No.
Catherine: Do you feel you are a coward?
Pippin: No.
Catherine: How do you feel .....?
Pippin: Trapped .....but happy.....(He looks from on to the other and smiles)Which isn't too bad for the end of a musical comedy. Ta da!
(They bow as the curtain comes down)

This is also the way the DVD ends. Don't forget that the DVD also stars Chita Rivera!

My friends who were in pippin and i were watching "Dirty Dancing" and we decided the scene at the end where everyone is at the talent show is pippin-esque. and we laughed. were like "everybody join!" ugh. definitely a weak excuse for a musical.

good times.
