#0Pippin in PIPPIN? or Danny in GREASE?
Posted: 7/27/03 at 3:23am

i have an audition for PIPPIN in september and one for GREASE in january with the same group at my school. my director has made the announcement that the person playing pippin will not be playing danny in grease and vice versa. i need some opinions on what i should go for...i know its kinda hard w/o hearing me sing, but i have a strong high baritone voice (can belt a G), i can dance very well and can do the dramatic pauses and stuff too, so if anyone wants to help me out, i'm here with open ears.

what should i go for? Pippin in "Pippin?" or Danny in "Grease?"

thanks!

Although Danny might be a more fun-filled role and get you dates, I would go with Pippin. A much more challenging part for a young actor/singer. Good luck. If you get either of these roles, I hope you will have a great experience. And if you don't get the leads there are other fun parts in both these shows...even chorus.

PEACE.

Somebody may need to confirm this for me, but I think the role of Pippin was written for a tenor and goes higher than a G. I think "Corner of the Sky" goes up to a high B. If that is so, I would go for Danny.

Pippin is writtenf or a tenor with a range of C-G#. I have seen it played successfully by a baritenor actor and a baritone so it can be done if they have a good upper register.

Trust me, Danny is much more of a fun role to play, and the ladies will LOVE you!!! Although, if you want to play a character will more substance and personality, Pippin is a much better character!

Bye!

Unless you are confident that YOU would get cast for whichever part you auditioned, then audition for PIPPIN in September. If you get it, great. If not, you still have a January audition to look forward to.

Just like the real world, you should try for every part. If you were to pass on auditioning for Pippin, who knows if you would get Danny? It sounds like you could potentially get Pippin, and then still be in Grease.

I always thought The Leading Player was the lead in Pippin.....if you can dance, go for that role..it's a great role (esp. for a magician...get to do a magic act to open the show)

In Pippin, both the Leading player and Pippin are classified as the leads.

The Leading Player was written for a tenor with a range of C to G#.

here is a link to a breakdown of roles in Pippin ::

..and here is a breakdown for Grease!

By the way, it seems as though you seem set on playing a lead in one or the other. Don't limit youreslf to those. Both shows have some great supporting roles

oh i am fully aware of that, but the leading player in pippin, no matter what any score says, it's frickin HIGH. and as with grease, i would love to play roger (again) or teen angel or even kenicke, but danny has the best songs (i think). i mean, "all choked up" is a kick ass ending to the show...why they wrote "you're the one that i want" is beyond me. however, roger's song, "mooning," has some fun stuff in it too, and teen angel is only one song...booo. AND i can't sing it like billy porter, *DIVA* SO! that's out.

i've worked with the director for 3 years and he somewhat plays favorites, BUT all is faves have graduated. so i guess i'm just kinda nervous because i know my audition might actually get me the part i want. and as much as i want to be in both shows, i don't want to be in the ensemble in both (again). i mean seriously, we all want a friggin song of our own and hear some applause dammit! (haha) :)

but anyways, thanks again! i'll just sing "corner of the sky" and "alone at the drive-in" and see what happens. that's all i can really do....well that and blow them away with an unexpected high note....lol
