Play Recommendations

I planned a trip to New York next week to see Hello, Dolly and Six Degrees of Separation. Now that Six Degrees is closing 3 days before my ticketed performance I have to find another play. In addition to Dolly I have a ticket for The Great Comet, Anastasia, A Doll’s House and the Play That Goes Wrong. Right now I am considering Indecent, The Little Foxes, Oslo, Present Laughter and Sweat. Which one of those plays would you most recommend? Or should try for Come From Away which is almost sold out?

I live in the LA area so I can often get to the shows that will tour.

I've seen all the plays you've listed and would definitely recommend The Little Foxes as my #1 choice, especially if you can see Linney as Regina/Nixon as Birdie. It is an engrossing production with amazing quality in all aspects. Behind that by a fairly large margin, I'd probably say Present Laughter or Indecent. I found Kevin Kline and Kate Burton to be knockouts, but the first act is a little draggy at some parts. I found Indecent had similar pacing issues at the beginning but no standout performances for me. Both have fantastic endings in my opinion, Indecent probably superior in the story aspect. Finally, Oslo is good (and the tony winner), but I refrain from saying great. Good performances, good staging... but I left feeling underwhelmed when compared to other productions I saw (I say this as a history and politics enthusiast as well so I'm surprised). Same goes for Sweat for me. I can't speak for Come From Away for now because I'm not seeing it until this weekend.

Oslo. It was my favorite play this season after ADHP2.

My recommendations are Indecent or The Little Foxes. I saw The Little Foxes with Cynthia Nixon as Regina and Laura Linney as Birdie, and while I have yet to go back and see it the other way, I'm sure you'll be watching great performances no matter which way you end up seeing it. Sorry to hear you're missing Six Degrees by just a few days. I loved that too.

I am sorry to miss Six Degrees. I always found it to be an intriguing play. The first Broadway show I ever saw was John Guare's adaptation of Two Gentlemen of Verona which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1971. My Masters Thesis in directing was on John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves. So I have always been interested in his plays but they are not produced that often.
