SUNSET BOULEVARD is based on a movie, not another play. And that's an entirely different thread. Several, actually.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

I don't believe anyone mentioned the musical Let It Ride, based on the play Three Men on a Horse.

Although not fitting this thread and, probably, there wouldn't be enough examples to make a thread, there's this sequence.

The novel "7 1/2 Cents" by Richard Bissell was the source of the musical, The Pajama Game, which was later filmed.

Then Richard Bissell wrote a book called "Say, Darling" based on his experiences involved with turning a novel into a Broadway musical.

The novel "Say, Darling" was then produced as a play with music (music: Jule Styne, lyrics by Comden and Green).

In "Say, Darling" gave a memorable performace as Ted Snow, which was a thinly disguised portrayal of Hal Prince, the producer of "The Pajama Game."

Also, don't forget one of the obvious ones -- Kiss Me, Kate which was based on (and incorporates as the play-within-a-play) Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.

Two Gentleman of Verona was based on the Shakespeare play of the same name -- and Hamlet is the source for the classic Rockabye Hamlet and in many ways the basic plot for The Lion King as well.

"Don't forget all the Shakespeare adaptations:
Comedy of Errors = BOYS FROM SYRACUSE and OH BROTHER
12th Night = YOUR OWN THING and PLAY ON
The Tempest - RETURN TO FORBIDDEN PLANET "

I'm going to see the latest musical adaptation of one of Shakespeare's plays -- MERRY WIVES, based on THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR -- in Stratford-Upon-Avon in a couple of weeks. Simon Callow is playing Falstaff and Dame Judi Dench is playing Mistress Quickly.

Let's not forget about the productions of Carrie and Shogun (books to films to musicals...does that count?)
