The Whale is a truly terrific play, by a very delightful new voice (Sam Hunter). If you're familiar with Hunter's last play, A Bright New Boise, you'll definitely enjoy The Whale, for very different reasons, of course.
The play tackles various topical issues, such as religion, obesity in America, healthcare, etc. You should definitely look into this play, if you were, at all, intrigued by the premise. You won't be disappointed.

where had it been produced previously?

It was previously produced at the Denver Center. Upcoming productions are slated for South Coast Rep and Victory Gardens Theater. You can see a nifty video trailer on YouTube from the Denver production.
