I need help with the smart theater people!!! Can you please give me some suggestions for great uptempo songs from musicals that are NOT currently on bway? I need an uptempo for a placement audition and I'm stuck! I don't want something that is currently out. I have a big chest voice I love to use and any help would be great.

Isnt' You Can Always Count on Me from I Can Get it For You Wholesale?
I could be way off :).
Yeah, Always True to You from KMK would be good too.
I Could Have Danced All Night is a good one too, I know it sounds strange because it's so popular, but hardly anyone ever does it anymore, its a cute song that's got a lot of energy and a decent range, it's short and sweet, and the auditioners always eat it up.
If you've got a great soprano I'd also reccomend This Place is Mine from Phantom (Maury Yeston) if you can get your hands on the music.

no, "You can Always Count on Me" is definitly from City of Angels. Perhaps there is more than one?
But yes, I'd say anything Cole Porter, and any of the following:
Holding Out For A Hero, Footloose
Shy, Mattress
Everything's Coming Up Roses, Gypsy
I Cain't Say No, OK
I Enjoy Being A Girl, Flower Drum Song
I Got The Sun In The Morning, Annie Get Your Gun
Let's Hear It For The Boy, Footloose
What I Did For Love, Chorus Line
And one of my all time favs, that could be amazing:
Wherever He Ain't, from Mack and Mabel

"You Can Always Count On Me" is from City of Angels and it's a great suggestion. You can also try:
"The Life of the Party" from Lippa's Wild Party
"See What I Wanna See" by MJ LaChiusa
"Wherever He Ain't" from Mack & Mabel
"I Still Believe" from Miss Saigon
What Broadway/Off-Broadway performer could you compare your voice to? If you can answer that, I could have a bunch of suggestions.

I don't get why everyone does "Life of the party". I've heard it used at a lot of auditions and have never been impressed by it.
If you want something from the Lippa TWP I'd suggest "Out Of The Blue" - much more range on all counts. Or if you want something on a similar page to "life", try "Raise The Roof".
I'm editing to expand on that response.
I think "Out Of The Blue" is a much better audition piece because it tells a story. Life of the Party, not so much. "Blue" has a wider range vocally and acting-wise and therefore not only will give you your best shot at showing off but will keep whoever you're auditioning for entertained. It's not just a display in Idina-mania, which seems to be running rampant these days. It's important to keep up with what's going on as the current scene is probably what is most heard. The mindset gets out that "this is what's cool now, and this is what people want, because it works, so i'm going to do it too, because everyone else is and it's fun and popular now", and that mindset will kill you come audition time. Figure out what's popular and run in the other direction. Wicked's out and everyone's going super gaga over Chenoweth and Menzel, don't do anything they've sung. Find a similar performer or style and go for that, but for the love of god, don't walk in with "girl in 14g" hoping they'll think to cast you as the next Glinda. They won't.
Here endeth the rant. I'll get off that soapbox now....

"My New Philosophy" from YAGMCB
"Lights of Broadway" from The Wild Party (LaC's)
"Man Wanted" by Manilow
"Just One Step" from S4ANW
"Junkman" completely forgot the show but Debbie Gravitte sang it
Hope that helps a little bit

Posted: 5/31/04 at 11:23pmI Resolve from She Loves Me sounds like it would be a good choice. A Trip To The Library is great too but not as uptempo as I Resolve.....both are great songs though...esp. if you have a strong chest voice

"Who's That Girl?" from Applause
"If My Friends Could See Me Now" from Sweet Charity
"They're Playing My Song" from They're Playin Our Song
"We Need a Little Christmas" from Mame
"The Hostess with the Mostes on the Ball" from Call Me Madam
Hope this helps.

Posted: 5/31/04 at 11:57pmDid anyone else mention "I Can Cook Too" from On The Town? great song, but a bitch for the pianist! "You can Always Count on Me" is a great Cy Coleman uptempo, but slightly less well-known (and very similar) is his "Nobody does it Like Me" from Seesaw. I also like "No Man Left for Me" from Will Rogers Follies. Also there's "Crossword Puzzle" from Starting Here, Starting Now, which is good if you're a soprano/not much of a belter.
