I am going to be in NYC the beginning of December and need a decent hotel that is reasonably priced (around $250), clean, and conveniently located to the Broadway Theater (53rd Street) for one night.
I have gone to tripadvisor.com and I must say I am more confused now than ever! It seems that every hotel I have looked at in my price range have so many horror stories written about them. I have stayed at the Broadway Inn (not available on the night I am going). I have also stayed at the Radio City Apartments which I was considering until I read that two people on tripadvisor had problems with mice in their rooms.
Could someone please help me out and suggest a decent hotel? I understand that in my price range I am not going to get the Ritz and that all rooms in NYC are small. I am going to the matinee of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and the evening show of The Color Purple. My main concern is that I do not have a long walk to the hotel after the show at night since it will get out between 11:00 and 11:30.
Thanks so much for all your suggestions and recommendations in advance!
The Milford Plaza is pretty reasonable.
It's on 45th, next to the Golden Theatre. Probably a 10 minute or less walk from the Broadway Theatre

My favorite hotel is either the Peninsula or the St.Regis, but neither are in that price range. I would suggest looking at the Marriott Marquis or the Edison hotel. The location is central to the theater district.

Sheraton NY towers or Sheraton Manhattan are both in your range and the area you're looking for. They're also very nice.

sometimes they even do a deal buy 2 nights, get 1 free.
The Marquis is always so damn expensive. It's a nice hotel, but not even close to as nice as the Westin, Crowne Plaza, or Hilton...I'll never understand where they get off charging $400 a night.
This is considered high season with the holidays approaching. I don't know your exact dates but I am staying at Hotel QT at the end of October. Their prices were reasonable (and the tripadvisor reviews good) and right in the heart of all the theatres.
Don't know if it'll be more expensive during the time you're going but Sheraton was extremely nice when I went (very nice beds): http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=dspv&itid=&itdx=&itty=&from=f&shtl=1

My travel agent (a friend of the family) got us a GREAT price for the Marquis when I saw The Producers. It was around $200 a night. Very nice
Anyhoo, on topic, don't stay at the Best Western President (I don't remember the street, but it was right across from the Kerr Theatre). It was cheap, sure, but you definately got what you paid for...
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Here are the rates I have found.
Westin-$529
Sheraton Manhattan-$459
Sheraton Hotel & Towers-$459
Marriot Marquis-$529
Hotel QT-$366
Milford Plaza-$189
Edison Hotel-$217
Belvedere-$247
Best Western President-$243
Comfort Inn-$244
Any thoughts?

omg...what are your dates??
I ask only because I happened to be looking to go down for a few days myself in December or January and have found the Sheraton for as low as $199, Westin for about $250, and Crowne Plaza for $218.
Do you already have tickets? Are these dates set in stone?
Wow...those rates are high. I wouldn't worry about walking here at night. It's not a scary place. If you don't mind going uptown a little or downtown like 1 or 2 subway stops you may fine a little better rate at some of the hotels away from Times SQ. 11:30 on a saturday night, NYC is still bustling with a lot of people out and about. I just wouldn't worry about safety if that is a concern.
if you'd stay in queens, there's a holiday inn express right off the 7 for $80 w/ an Entertainment Card (you buy the book for like $20)

The Portland Square Hotel on West 47th isn't the ritziest hotel in Manhattan, but it's very cheap (around $160), the staff is very pleasant, and it's a nice establishment. The rooms are small, but it's not that big of a deal, especially if you'll only be there for one night.
I do already have the show tickets. It's the only days I could get time off of work with the exception of weekends. I try to avoid NYC on the weekends because of the large crowds during the holiday season from Thanksgiving thru New Year's.

If you're looking at the list you posted, I'd go with the Edison. The Milford Plaza is awful. The Edison is old and not luxurious, by any stretch of the imagination, but if you want something in that price range, it's lightyears better than the Milford.
Those rates do sound high but I guess everything goes up starting Thanksgiving weekend and stays high til after New Year's. I know my parents are visiting next weekend and are staying at the Renaissance which is beautiful and nicer than any of those expensive ones you listed, for $369/night. Anyway, good luck.
I have heard phenominal things about Hotel QT.
I stayed in the edison a few years ago and it was fine, but that was a few years ago...I also wouldn't worry about walking the city at that hour--it's perfectly safe and there are tons of cops all over the theatre district.
I've never stayed here but you might want to check out the Travel Inn Hotel. The rate is only $174.

I love the Hotel Edison. I haven't stayed there in a few years, but it was my first NY hotel and it just feel like NY to me.
I was going to stay there for my NY trip this year, but they were all booked. I am sure I'll still find myself in their restaurant for breakfast a couple of days during my stay.
The best way to go is to book through a travel agent. They can get amazing deals on hotels, airfare, etc. Also, they can arrange backstage tours and other cool stuff at amazing prices!
Sorry about the high prices. Pretty outrageous.
I have also used Express Reservations. They have several in your price range, the Flathotel for one. Don't know anything about it however.
