I am part of a group called Save Our Soaps - Guiding Light/As the World Turns. We are a group on facebook that is trying to save the soaps and keep work in New York City. Our group has just recently changed our name to Save Our Soaps 2010. We are a very active group trying to save the above mentioned soaps as well as all the soaps that are left on daytime tv. Many stars learn their trade from the soap operas. How many jobs are going to be left in the New York area once these shows are gone? Once ATWT goes off in September, there will be just one remaining New York soap that is in the bottom of the ratings along with ATWT. Please help our cause by joining our facebook page on the following link:

We are the facebook group that was visited by the FBI because CBS complained because they were swamped with bars of soap and thought it was anthrax. We are also the group that staged a rally in NYC last month at CBS. We are currently on the CNN site for the coverage of the rally we received. We need your help in keeping the video on the site. If you do nothing else, please take the time to go to the following link on CNN and see what are group has done. We need people to click as many times as possible to watch the video so it stays on the CNN site. Please click the link and not the CNN logo. Here is the link to the coverage of the rally:

I always feel bad for the poor mailroom schlubs who have to open the ridiculous stuff people send to networks in an effort to save their shows. Maybe you should put that energy into getting people to watch these soaps.
I hope those bars of soap were at least donated to a shelter.

I wonder if the soap they sent was Proctor & Gamble.

You would have to ask CBS what they did with the so called bars of anthrax. And no they were not Proctor and Gamble soap. Seriously though many Broadway casts are made up of current or past members of soaps. Look at the popularity of Matthew Morrison from Glee. He was on ATWT for a while a few years ago. Many Broadway stars supplement there income with a soap opera. Have you thought of what happens to the crews of these shows? There are less and less jobs in NYC due to these cancellations. TV shows and movies are now being shot in other states because it is cheaper to do it elsewhere.
Also is it so wrong that people want to escape from their grim reality for an hour or less a day. The soap viewers are there but they just watch in uncounted ways these days.

So you wanna deny THEM jobs?! Jeeeeeeeez. People gotta work in other states, too.
Also, it should be "fewer and fewer," not "less and less."

Maybe As the World Turns could set up shop in Idaho or something.
And yeah, it's a shame when people are put out of work, but guess what - it happens all the time and it's happening to lots of folks all over the country even as we speak. And a lot of them don't have the benefits that come from being in a union!
Businesses, and the entertainment industry, evolve and change with the times all the time. I have no interest in soap operas myself. They will be replaced by something else that employs people, perhaps in NYC, perhaps not. It is what it is.

Perhaps you should make your plea to Mayor Bloomberg. Who wants to do business in a city where you can't smoke in a bar, can't eat salt, can't drink soda, can't flush the toilet just once, can't get to a Broadway show on time because the traffic pattern in Times Square is a nightmare, can't get 3 miles on a weekend using the subway without a 2 hour wait time and a map of the tri-state area?
I'm sorry, but the soap opera industry has been dying a slow death since the mid 90's. There are a plethora of reasons why (like increased TV competition) but the main one is that most people just aren't interested in them any more. Sorry, but As The World Turns is gone. Maybe they'll be replaced by others shows that will shoot in New York. And maybe not. And like Lizzie said, folks in other states have to work too. NYC shouldn't hog ALL the jobs!

You can't smoke in a bar in a lot of American cities.

You think soap operas aren't popular because of a smoking ban? Conservative's "minds" sure do work in mysterious ways.
"Who wants to do business in a city where you can't smoke in a bar, can't eat salt, can't drink soda, can't flush the toilet just once, can't get to a Broadway show on time because the traffic pattern in Times Square is a nightmare, can't get 3 miles on a weekend using the subway without a 2 hour wait time and a map of the tri-state area?"
To answer your first question: me.
As for the others, every day I eat salt and flush the toilet as often as I like. I have a soda whenever I care to. I have never been late to a Broadway show nor have I ever waited 2 hours for a subway.

"You can't smoke in a bar in a lot of American cities."
And that's why they don't have soap opera production companies.

I think it's like Puerto Rico, not really a state, we just keep it around as a playground.
It's called show BUSINESS! If the soap isnt making money, it'll shut down. If it's easier and less expensive to move it to LA, they're going to do it.
I read in TV guide that The Good Wife is the new Law & Order for employing New York actors...I suggest you send the casting director a pic/resume.
I'm curious, though, as to what effect this group thought the bars of soap would have, apart from convincing the network that the core fan base is, you know, insane.

I have nothing against other states. I know the economy first hand. My husband is losing his job so they can send the work to Singapore. I am talking about Air Force work. I live in CT which is one of the states that is building movie studios and using the state as the site for many shows.
While I respect your opinions, everyone is entitled to their own opinion without being bashed. Tell me where are you people going to work once your work goes overseas? Is it so wrong that people want to escape from reality for an hour or less a day? I face the real world everyday. I face the fact that I am disabled and I face the fact that my husband is losing his job. I face the fact that we lost our home which was the home I grew up in as a child. So please forgive me if I upset you, if you don't want to help or care just don't say anything.
Perhaps you should devote your time and energy to a political campaign to address some of those problems instead of wasting it on mailing soap bars to CBS to save TV shows.
We don't go on soap opera fansites to complain every time a Broadway show closes. What was the last Broadway show you saw? Don't you care that NYC is losing hundreds of jobs in the next two months with show closings?
Well soap operas provide opportunities for Broadway actors so we SHOULD care, ok?!
Yes, Jason Tam, the sole Broadway actor currently employed on a soap. The rest are from their inbred casting pool of pretty people with dead looks in their eyes and an acting range of two emotions- hysterically sad and hysterically angry.
