Fast-paced comedy/drama that takes place entirely in an Italian chain restaurant. 1 hour 40 minutes, no intermission. You can tell Playwrights Horizons put a lot of effort into this - absolutely superb cast (T.R. Knight from Grey's Anatomy, plus a whole host of other theater veterans who have multiple Broadway shows under their belts) and very detailed set design (restaurant booths, etc).
It's set in a small town (Pocatello), where businesses are drying up and going out of business. The restaurant where the employees work is probably going to close next week. Eddie (T.R. Knight) is the restaurant manager. His brother and his brother's wife come to visit. We get to meet the other employees (waiters and waitresses) and see all the drama in their lives. There is some minor bickering over food but then some pretty major arguments and screaming matches throughout the play.
Without going into too much detail, it touches on a whole range of subjects (being gay, death, unhappy marriage, being a teenager, drug abuse, Alzheimer's, etc). The time really flies by and I think most people will really love this show. So many funny jokes, poignant moments, and very explosive anger as well. (I really loved The Flick and also loved this show too, which sorta reminds me of a 1-act faster-paced version of The Flick, with many more characters.)
They even sell a signature alcoholic drink in the lobby named after Pocatello (orange colored drink).

Surprised more people aren't talking about this, an absolutely fantastic evening of theatre.
TR Knight is stunning (WAY better than when he was in A Life In The Theatre)
Sam Hunter just writer these really strange bleak plays that still manage to make you feel something in your chest at the end and still makes you laugh along the way, absolutely deserved that MacArthur Genius Grant

Posted: 12/25/14 at 9:00amSaw this last Sunday - yes, a terrific production, and T.R Knight's performance is one of the best of the season. Get there before the Jan 4th closing!

Posted: 12/25/14 at 9:21amI had contemplated seeing this while in NY last week, but opted for The Invisible Hand and The Oldest Boy instead. But, your posts have just convinced me to make another trip. I'm attending the closing performance on 1/4 as well as the closing of Side Show. Thanks, Times Square Regular and Lights Out! Merry and Happy to You!
