What character sings that? I always thought it was Lois Lane. How does the character fit in the plot.

In the original version the song was sung by Sydney Carlton. She was the assistant to gossip columnist, Max Mencken.

In the Dallas Theatre Center revisal penned by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the song was still sung by a character named Sydney, but this time her name was Sydney Sharpe and she herself was the gossip columnist. Max Mencken was an evil millionaire, aka Lex Luthor. They just couldn't legally call him Lex because DC refused the rights to the character.

In both versions the set up is basically the same. Sydney is smitten with Clark Kent and pointing out his better qualities. In the original Sydney was more infatuated with Max and in the revisal she had her eye on Clark.

I saw the original show (there was an ad in the back of all DC comics and I pestered my parents to include it when we went to New York) and I remember the mad scientist's assistant (who I now realize was Linda Lavin, of "Alice" fame) kept trying to take off Clark Kent's shirt as she sang. Heady stuff for a 12-year-old....
