Hi. I havent been online in awhile. I was wondering, how do you think a musical version of pretty woman would do on broadway? it is a very nice story and could feature some great music. maybe by mark hollmann (urinetown)? just an idea

The problem with Pretty Woman as a musical is that we are all familiar, maybe too familiar, with the story. It is a fable without suspense.

The adaptors would need to reconceive the tale for the stage and figure out a way to tell this story better. Most of the time songs to a familiar story don't clarify a thing. Dracula anyone?

WOSQ, as much as we don't want to accept this, that is exactly what works on Broadway nowadays. The more familiar, the better.

Right. Jukebox shows, movies-into-musicals, revivals, that's all we can handle nowadays.

Alas, I know this and it makes Sister Mary want to go 'bleech'.... No, wait, that's another play entirely.

Go get your copy of The Season by William Goldman. At the end of the chapter on Hair, a producer is asked what the success of Hair would mean for Broadway. The reply, "I think we're in for a spate of sh*tty rock musicals." I quoted that after I saw Mamma Mia.

Things don't change very much: Elvis, The Beach Boys, John Lennon. What's next?

The movie was blah...way overhyped. I don't see how a musical could be any worse- or better- so why bother?
