Previews or Official Opening?

I wanna get tickets to Sweet Charity, but I don't know if I should try to see it while its in previews or when it officially opens. What do you suggest?

re: Previews or Official Opening?

The show will be frozen no later than a week before opening (and probably even earlier considering how many months they are on the road before the Broadway opening), because that's when the critics' previews begin. And chances are discounts will be more readily available BEFORE opening (though no discounts have popped up yet). I'd wait until the discount offers come out and then book tickets for a few days before opening night -- you'll exactly the same show as you would after opening and probably save yourself a lot of money in the process.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but what do you mean by "frozen"?

re: Previews or Official Opening?

During previews the creative team will of often tinker, add, cut, tighten and change things in a show, sometimes major, sometimes minor, sometimes on a daily basis. Once they are finally satisfied (or at least not too unsatified) they "freeze" the show and they won't make anymore changes to the production. This gives the actors a chance to settle into the final version of the show (and not have to worry about new lines, new blocking, new choreography, new costumes etc ....) before the critics show up. Depending what shape a show is in when it begins previews, the creative staff may stop tinkering and freeze it after just a week or two, or if a show's having problems, it may not be frozen until the day of the first critics' preview (usually about a week before opening).

re: Previews or Official Opening?

OK, that makes sense. See, I was wary of seeing it during previews because I would rather see the final (or "frozen") poduct, but since you assured me that it's the same show I'll try to get tickets for the preview. Thanks a ton for all your help, Margo!

re: Previews or Official Opening?

see it in like... the end of the 2nd week of previews, it may be frozen by then...

and sweet charity will promise to be a hot ticket because of its headlining cast... so it's probably best to get your tickets early...

like now.
