Hey guys --

I just got home from the matinee performance. I am a lover of musicals across the board and can usually find something (an actor, lighting, choreography...) to be super-impressed by. This whole production just left me wanting.

Yes, Charlotte was good -- I actually would have loved her to dance more since she's got the Fosse moves in her! She looked pretty comfortable in the role, though every now and then she looked like she was trying for laughs a little too hard. Her voice was quite good, though she had a few out of breath moments. To be honest, I agree with those who think Christina really could pull this off...

Dennis was hysterical -- the elevator scene where we first meet him is nonstop laughs. Dennis's voice is quite good when he's actually singing, though usually he's trying to be funny so the pure voice doesn't come out. Cy Coleman wrote Oscar a new song "A Good Impression" for this revival, which was a great addition.

Honorable mention to Paul Schoeffler as Vittorio. How disappointing we never had the pleasure to see him after his scene in the middle of the 1st Act.

Sets were great, costumes vibrant, fun dancing when we got to see Fosse....though there was just something missing. I didn't have that "wow" feeling when a show really comes together. The plot is not particularly compelling. The scenes are quite disjointed. I feel like they were individual numbers strung together with a thin plot. ...which is fine, as long as the numbers are fantastic. Unfortunately, I never really saw much that was truly outstanding. I'm really not sure what could be changed/improved before New York, so I fear this is not the smash hit the producers are hoping for....

P.S. Student Rush for $25 -- I got Row K in the side Orchestra!

as much as i like Christina Applegate, the whole scenario sheds light on the fact that when it really comes down to it Broadway is all about $$$$ over talent (not that Applegate doesn't have any). This statement from director Walter Bobbie says it all:

'When we started to do the show, we thought of Charlotte, but we couldn't raise $8 million on her name."
