A month or so I went back to Australia to visit relatives and what have you. While I was there I also managed to get some tickets to see the most talked about musical now showing in Sydney.
For those of you who did not see the cult Australian film, on which the musical is based, the story follows a group of three drag queens travelling the Aussie Outback, for a performance at Alice Springs, in central australia, in a bus they call, Priscilla - Queen of the desert.
The show is a jukebox show with disco and pop hits from both the 70's & 80's. The show is absolutely hillarious, with outrageous costumes and even more than enough Audience participation.
Some of the jokes, however, may not make an American theatre-goer laugh as much as it makes an Australian theatre-goer laugh.
But you never know, hopefully one day this show might hit Broadway!

A little known fact is that in the original screenplay, Pan's Labyrinth was Pan's FLAByrinth. Hmmmmmmm...glad they changed it.

I am a bit skeptical of turning movies into musicals however this does sound exciting. I am unsure of the audience for it here in the States though.

The show is flopping in Australia - but keeps running despite less than sold-out audiences because the deal with the theater basically prevents it from being kicked out. A big disappointment for all those who thought it would have a great future.

Yes - but if I am correct, The Boy From Oz was basically a flop when it started in Australia, yet American producers saw great potential in it, and soon enough it was on Broadway. It enjoyed some success, am I right?
The show was ruthlessly cut and completely changed from the Original Australian version though.

The Boy From OZ was far from a flop when it first toured Australia, it ran for about 4 years touring the country selling out everywhere it played.

Todd was asked to do the Broadway production, but due to money issues the deal fell though.

The only reason the show was changed for Broadway, was quiet simiply Americans would not have understood it, they dumbed the show down..! ( not trying to be rude )

As for Priscilla, no matter how one looks at it, Australia does not have a large theatre going public ( we are a country of 22 million people in a area the size of the states )

The show is playing in a 2,000 plus seat theatre ( one the "Producers" could not even sell out ), while it is not selling as well as hoped. I do belive they have recouped there investment.

Priscilla is moving into the Regent theatre Melbourne, for a six month session beforing touring the rest of the country, that would make it a hit.

There is talk of the show opening in London end of next year.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Todd was great as Peter Allen. I'd kill for a chance to see him again.

As for Priscilla going to London, that will have a greater chance of success than on a Broadway.

I mean... if Kath & Kim works in the UK but doesn't work in the US, than Priscilla would do great there.

In some of the tech theatre trade magazines, there was a lot of talk about PRISCILLA, and it looks like it's great fun.

As a side note: this was discussed in an earlier thread, and one of the posters noted: "Why would they do this? It's just a drag show!", to which I respond now, "OF COURSE, YA NIMROD! IT'S ABOUT THREE DRAG QUEENS!"

I doubt it'll come to Broadway, which is both a shame and a blessing, but if it goes to London, I'm getting one of those cheap flights and heading over to see it.

In the UK, many of us were brought up on a diet of 'Neighbours' and 'Home & Away'. We're full-on DOWN with our Aussie humour. Roll on a West End Priscilla please. ^_^

I'd have been interested had it NOT been a jukebox musical.

Why this musical probably works best as a jukebox musical, there are some moments where the show cries out for some original songs. But I guess "MacArthur Park" and "I Say A Little Prayer" will have to do...

Bring it to london we will love it, i think our humor is more suited to it(come on guys Kath and Kim is hysterical )

Also as Weez said we have been spoon fed Australian TV shows(home and Away, Neighbors, Prisoner cell block H, Flying Doctors etc) we also get all the Australian TV stars turning in to pop stars here lol Kylie and her sister Danni, Jason Donovan , Delta Goodrum etc.
