Producers or Mamma Mia?

Okay, I need you guys to help me persuade my mother. We're planning a trip to New York later this month, and we're planning on seeing as many shows as we can while there.

She wants to see Mamma Mia. I really, really don't. I've tried reasoning with her (it's just a bunch of ABBA songs with some kind of plot stuck in between, in my opinion), but she won't budge.

I suggested going to see The Producers, but she doesn't want to, because we already saw the National Tour. I pleaded more (the National Tour can't be compared to the Broadway version, I need to see both!) but she still wants to see Mamma Mia.

So, I figured I would beg for advice from forum members. Which do you think we should see - The Producers or Mamma Mia?

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

I don't like either of them. How about Hairspray?

That's a good idea! But that would mean picking between The Producers and Hairspray, I don't know if I could do that...I'm so indecisive.

MAMMA MIA! is a masterpiece of theatre.

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

Lane & Broderick are really special in their roles. But I also saw the Philly tour of Producers which was admirable. If your mom saw a similarly good tour of Producers then I would give in to seeing Mama Mia! if that what she wants. Gotta keep mamma happy!

While I enjoyed "The Producers" a great deal, I think Spider has a good compromise. If the two of you can't agree between those two shows, why not avoid more arguments and go for a third option I think you'd both really enjoy. "Hairspray" is terrific -- fun, funny, great score, great cast, great dancing, costumes, sets etc... and won a boatload of Tony Awards (including Best Musical). See if she'll go for that.

definately hairspray. and phantom! and wicked. but you didn't hear that from me!!

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

keepin' it on the down-low. But, seriously.......Hairspray is suited for both your mom and you, meaning it is not as racy as say RENT but not as corny as say...something else, lol. Also, the music rocks and it is just all around fun

And, it's got a guy in drag! Where can it go wrong?

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

If it had to be between those two, see the Producers...you get to see Hunter, too! re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

But if this is really going to be a difficult decision to make between the two of you, go see Hairspray!

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

Hunter is still in it? I thought he left...but that's just me being silly. It would also mean I'd get to see Jonathan Freeman as Roger, which would be a highlight. Ohh I want to see The Producers, just for Roger and Carmen.

That's it - when my mom wakes up, I'm telling her to go see whatever she wants. I'm gonna take money out of the bank and see The Producers.

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

I think Hunter leaves in January...Richard Kind starts in Jan.

Yay, have fun at the Producers! I might go see the tour this week...I am itching to see it. re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

Go see it! I saw the one with Alan Ruck and Lewis J. Stadlen. It was great. Unfortunately, Alan Ruck is leaving the tour a month before it comes to Boston (and a month before it ends - what? Why not wait the extra month?), so I won't get to see him again...but I'll get Harry Bouvy and Lee Roy Reams, so it's all good.

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

My choice would be obvious. re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

Hunter and Brad were both fantastic and I thought no two people could ever be as good as Nathan and Matthew. But I was literally doubled over with laughter for most of the show (and it was my third time!) and would definitely go back again if I had the chance. You can't go wrong with it - even if you have seen one of the touring companies. There's just nothing like seeing it on its "home turf." But maybe that's just me. re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

Are you going to be able to see The Frogs too? I seem to recall you were hoping to catch it.

Mamma Mia! They don't look as good in a Speedo at The Producers. HAHA

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

Go see the Producers if you like naughty, burlesque humor and some fun.

I find Mamma Mia boring but then I've never been a fan of ABBA. I'd say if you don't particularly like ABBA music, you probably won't like Mamma Mia, but that's just my opinion.

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

producers all the way re: Producers or Mamma Mia? if your mom wants to listen to ABBA songs, buy her a CD. that way she doesnt have to listen to the horrid acting in between the songs which is a pathetic attempt to tie them all together

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

I like the Hairspray idea, but if it's between Mamma Mia and Producers, I'd go with the Producers. (Unless your mom is a big ABBA fan which only someone that age can understand, I guess).

re: Producers or Mamma Mia?

Depends, Possum - do you want to see a show with a well written plot and great songs or just a rehashing of old pop tunes with cute dancers and some strong voices?
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

go for Hairspray.

No, I am not at all biased.

The Producers

Go for the Producers. I don't think enough can be said about Hunter Foster's brilliant turn in this role. Brad Oscar is also superb. Without a doubt in my mind, after seeing every Broadway Leo and Max, Hunter Foster is the BEST LEO BLOOM, and Brad Oscar is second (Only to Fred Applegate!)
