Rudin is co-producing Sondheim's new show isn't he? The last new musical Sondheim had on Broadway was Passion, which I think was produced by Lincoln Center and Scott Rudin, right? That didn't premier anywhere before Broadway. Maybe The Public and Rudin will take Bunuel right to Broadway in a collaboration like Passion. Idk. Maybe I'm reaching. Also, Rudin likes to do a late winter/spring musical every year now it seems. Maybe this is his 2019 musical.
SomethingPeculiar said: "If Mr. Sondheim happens to deliver a producible draft, I'm sure any NYC non-profit theatre would magically find a way to squeeze Sondheim/Ives/Mantello/Rudin into their season."
The Public has also added shows to its season after the initial announcement before...
Per the NY TIMES-Public article yesterday:
The season will not include a new musical by Stephen Sondheim, based on two films by Luis Buñuel, that the composer at one point had hoped would be ready for a production at the Public Theater last year. A spokeswoman for the Public, Candi Adams, said “it’s a musical in development, and we will happily be doing it when it’s ready.”
