Anyone know when the Public Theater will announce next season.
Posed the same question to Member Services when I got the reminder to renew my membership. The rep said they haven’t been given a specific date yet, “but soon”.
The Public just announced their season:

Disappointed to see that Sondheim is missing from the lineup. But otherwise, wow! What a great-looking season!
Glenn Close, Jake Gyllenhaal, Susan-Lori Park, Nick Payne, Simon Stephens, and Tim Blake Nelson!
Also happy to see that Luis Alfaro is back. I loved Oedipus El Rey!
I didn't get to see Ain't No Mo' when they did it as part of the workshop series, but I heard it was phenomenal.
I heard very mixed-to-negative things about Girl From the North Country, but I'm curious to see it for myself, especially if that amazing cast transfers.
Jake Gyllenhaal!
Glad to see at least one musical, and one (kind of?) play with music. Looks like with the success of Killing Eve, Sandra Oh won't be reprising her Public Studio performance in Wild Goose Dreams.
Really starting to doubt that we're getting that Sondheim show.
Interesting in the timing of "The Girl From the North Country". It's slated to play Toronto Feb/March, and am wondering if it will indeed make it to Toronto then. Wonder if this goes over well, it would move to Broadway...Toronto is a completely different production or UK tour that we have had in the past.

Question for you all - for those of you that are members, how much are the tickets usually? I'm debating getting a membership for next year and my head is swimming a bit at the different options and what that means for me in terms of actually purchasing tickets.
sadly NO SONDHEIM this year...time is running out for this genius to delight us with his new musical...maybe it will never happen?
Another year without the Sondheim/Ives project. Really hoping they workshop it this year so we can see it in 2019/2020.

It depends. Ranging like $45 for small plays to $70 for musicals. And for non-member prices, that it can be $10 to $30 more than the member price.
I don't think the new Sondheim show is happening anymore. Unless they've decided to move it straight to Broadway.

Sondheim knows better than that. Road Show was a sure-fire for Broadway until it opened at The Public.
I had high hopes we would see the Sondheim show this year. Just a little crushed today.

I'm sure Sea Wall/A Life will be good given the talent involved but the description is really vague. It sounds like a really interesting season. Why does it seem like the Public is able to so effortlessly give voice to diverse talent telling new stories when other NY companies can't?
Sondheim could still happen elsewhere, right?

One imagines the issue is The Public waiting on Sondheim, not Sondheim waiting for The Public to fit him into their schedule...

Can someone explain this Sondheim thing?

The Public is already attached to Sondheim's upcoming project with David Ives, so naturally all of us keep hoping to see it whenever the Public announces their season. We've been disappointed the last few years, and we've been disappointed again!
I think what makes this especially disappointing is that Joe Mantello just said in the Times that he hopes to be directing the new Sondheim show this winter.
Maybe it's going right in to Broadway...

You read what he said with the right amount of caution, but then skipped over it.
Also, Mantello CAN direct something this winter and it be a workshop that we don't see.
Scott Rudin has also been attached to the Sondheim project, and was probably involved before the Public was. If Mr. Sondheim happens to deliver a producible draft, I'm sure any NYC non-profit theatre would magically find a way to squeeze Sondheim/Ives/Mantello/Rudin into their season.
Rudin is co-producing Sondheim's new show isn't he? The last new musical Sondheim had on Broadway was Passion, which I think was produced by Lincoln Center and Scott Rudin, right? That didn't premier anywhere before Broadway. Maybe The Public and Rudin will take Bunuel right to Broadway in a collaboration like Passion. Idk. Maybe I'm reaching. Also, Rudin likes to do a late winter/spring musical every year now it seems. Maybe this is his 2019 musical.
