Has anyone else seen this yet?
The experience of it is a blend of bedtime story, art installation, dream, and sleepover at a friend’s house for the first time. The ability to transition you from the hustle of NYC, to the cold vastness of The Shed, to the quiet anterooms of Gallery 4, to the various interiors of Viola’s Room is impressive in and of itself. But if you let yourself go and really experience the world Punchdrunk has built to house the story they’re telling, then you’re in for a treat. It’s dreamy and seamless in a way I’ve not encountered since Then She Fell or the early, pre-fanatic days of Sleep No More and satisfyingly intimate. It channels the purple prose of fairytales through the tangible feminine rage of 90s pop culture, all aided by the excellent narration by Helena Bonham Carter (tell me your pulse doesn’t accelerate when she whispers “You have to move. Quickly.&rdquo.
I went today with a private group of 6 (they admit groups of up to 6 at a time, and you can purchase a private group ticket or individual), and I’m already eyeing a time slot to see it again tonight. It doesn’t necessarily warrant repeat viewings, but I immediately wanted to experience it again. I’m not sure how it plays with a group of up to 5 strangers, but if you can get together a group of 6 or less, I highly recommend it.
