Putting biases aside, when anticipating the Rent and The Producers movies...

Rent will have it's normal cult following but tank at the box office quickly. Middle America and those over 35 won't care a lick about it. The Producers just from the opening date is expected tom be a box office smash. You don't release a movie at Christmas if you don't expect it to be a box office winner. Middle America will go see it just for the star quality. No one off of these boards could care less about Menzel or Dawson.

Think ouside the "Broadway Box", Hollywood is just different. Just because YOU love it will not make it a hit.

all the talk saying that Rent has far more publicity and "buzz" around it is really an obvious point. rent is being released one whole month prior to the producers. So, from here, Rent will be out in three months, while the producers will still not be out for four. Naturally, rent will make it into articles like "fall movie previews" and be advertised more. Let's see in a month or two when we can really compare "the buzz".

Another hint that the Rent movie will tank. From Playbill:

"The eagerly awaited movie musical "Rent" has canceled its limited release date, Nov. 11, the day the film was to open in select cities across the country.

Instead, the Chris Columbus-directed film will hit all U.S. screens at the same time. "Rent," according to a spokesperson for the movie musical, will open in theatres nationwide Nov. 23."

Hollywood does this so that the crtics don't have a chance to flame the movie. If they expected great reviews, you open in limited to create the "buzz". I'd be amazed if it cracks the top 5 BO it's first week.

I think that Rent will be a bit of a disaster with most critics for exactly one reason: Chris Columbus. Not a director many critics like (except Roger Ebert, strangely enough). I often agree with their complaints- he's never met an emotionally manipulative plot twist he doesn't like. I fear that he will make Rent's already somewhat questionable ending seem hopelessly cloying. And I'm afraid that in film form many will think most of Rent and perhaps its cast somewhat dated.

With the audience, I agree with tkts.

The Producers will clearly do better than Rent because Mel Brooks is more widely known than Rent is, and the fact that although fans of both The Producers and Rent will be seeing the films, there will probably be more packing in to see The Producers because not everyone saw Lane and Broderick during their two runs in the show.

The other cast members will also attract people to see it. I mena more people know Will Ferrell, Uma Thurman, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, and Jon Lovitz. Not that many people know who Idina Menzel and(unless they watch Law and Order) Jesse L. Martin is. Rent might do better awards wise, but it won't beat The Producers in box office totals.

I agree Liz about Colombus. I still can't see why, with all the film directors to choose from, he was chosen. And from what I've read his reasoning was, "I once lived in New York City for 17 years." Wow Chris, so have about 20 million people.

As a long time Chris Columbus detractor, I am also very worried he is going to do something terrible to the movie (my fears also lie with the ending) but so far it looks better than I ever expected and the initial buzz from critics is not "this is a smaltzy story that Columbus has done his usual syrupy adaptation too"

The Producers really has the power at the moment because Brooks has always been strong with the critics as well.
I made that point about it being released later hence the lack of "buzz" first re: Putting biases aside, when anticipating the Rent and The Producers movi

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

I don't think Columbus is going to do something terrible to it. I think he's just going to play it totally safe, which means we're not going to see any "new take" or artistic vision with the film. Just point the camera and shoot the stage show with great respect, and make it look good. Any deviances from the original play will be minor at best (most likely). Nothing earth-shattering or surprising. (In other words, boring.) Even the supposed ending worries.

I think more people would flock to the movie if they thought they hadn't already seen it either in NYC or on a tour. I would be lining up now to buy a ticket if Baz Luhrmann had directed it. It would add to his already impressive canon on "La Boheme."

Baz, or Spike Lee. I imagine he could have done some interesting things with it.
