Question About 'Cabaret' w/ Judi Dench

#0Question About 'Cabaret' w/ Judi Dench

I bought the OBCR of Cabaret this evening and read the CD booklet in the car. It said that after the huge success of that production it was moved to London. It said that Dame Judi Dench played Sally Bowles. I've read this elsewhere before. Even though on Amazon.com under the London recording it claims that Dench played Frl. Schneider in this version. That site also stated that Maria Friedman played Sally. Now, is my CD booklet not well written, or is Amazon.com wrong?

Pajama, maybe I can clarify this for you.

Dame Judi Dench performed in two different productions of CABARET decades apart. In the first production (in the late 60's or early 70's), she played Sally Bowles. More recently, she was Frau Schneider in a production that starred Maria Friedman as Sally Bowles.

I hope this information allows you to sleep blissfully tonight.

By the way, you really shouldn't read CD booklets while you are driving.

Judi Dench was the original Sally in London's Cabaret which you can get on cd.

In the late 1990's, JAY records produced a cd with all the music from Cabaret, including almost all the dance music and all the songs from the different productions and movie. This version stars Maria Freidman as Sally, Gregg Edelman as Cliff, Fred Ebb (lyricist) as Herr Schultz, and Judi Dench as Fraulien Schneider. This version was only planned as a recording to capture all the music and was never put on stage.

I love Judi Dench....
But if you want to hear the best song she ever did try and find a copy of the National Theater's recroding of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

And don't forget Jonathan Pryce as the Emcee in the 90's recording. My sole reason for buying the CDs.

Did she star in "tow" different productions, Dollypop? Don't criticize others for their typos when you yourself slip once and again. And by the way...I wasn't reading the booklet while I was driving.

Pajama, I'm so glad that you caught the typo I placed there just for your edification. You really are the sharpest knife in the drawer, so don't listen to what others may say!

It warms my heart to know you weren't reading the booklet while behind the wheel of your parents' Mercedes. Terrible things can happen if you don't give your full attention to the road. You're a remarkable lad, Pajama!

Several of us here have helped Pajama to understand the differences in the various CABARET recordings, but the lad hasn't had the courtesy of thanking any of us. Talk about gratitude! Geeze, a simple "Thanks guys" would be nice!

Yes i have both Judi Dench as Sally Bowles and as The Fraulein. The cd of her Sally is hard to get though, and sometimes expensive.

As for Dame Judy in NIGHT MUSIC, I must say that it is one of the best-conducted show albums I've ever heard. The orchestrations are glorious, the tempi are brisk without being rushed and the extended 'Glamorous Life' is truly marvelous.

However, though many of the performers from the British company are quite good, none match the original Broadway performances, including Dame Judy.

One of my favorite theatre stories-

The theatre staff of the original London cast of Cabaret finally put a sign up in the lobby stating:

"Please do not inquire as to the health of Miss Dench. That is her normal singing voice."

It's been said that Dame Judy was Kander and Ebb's favorite Sally.
