Please forgive me if this could be considered a terrifically silly question, but I've never seen the show, and have done my internet research but not turned up an answer, so I turn to you guys.
When is 'Mamma Mia!' set? I get the feeling it's the '70s from the movie costumes and the fact Abba are pretty '70s, but... I don't know. It's just one of those things I don't know for certain but would like to so it doesn't have the opportunity to niggle away at the back of my mind.
To make up for the inanity of this question, have a picture of Dominic Cooper in swimwear.
I thank you. ^_^
If it's set in the 70's, those wave-runners and his very modern looking board shorts are a bit anachronistic.
You present an excellent point. I must confess I wasn't looking at those particular details, shallow being that I am. ^_^ Just bog-standard modern-day setting with occasional hippyish overtones and '70s themes then?

Set in 1999.
Sophie mentions in the script that her birth year is 1979, and she's supposed to be 20 years old.
It hasn't been updated since the year the show was written.
Also, there are numerous references to the free-spirit essence of the 1970's throughout the show, which validates the whole '3 possible fathers' and the independent single mother and how 20 year old Sophie came to be, etc.
The Greek beach lifestyle provides the look of the costumes, the sun-kissed hair, the bohemian-type jewelry, etc. The outsiders (like Tanya and the 3 'possible' dads) have more of a conventional mainlander look.
