This is an odd question, but it's been sitting in the back of my mind for a while and I was wondering if anyone knew had a definitive answer...
I know that Jonathan Larson and Roger Bart were friends from way back. I'm assuming that it is just a coincidence that his name should be the same as one of the characters in Mr. Larson's fantastic musical, but does anyone know for sure one way or the other? I know so many of you know the ins and outs of Mr. Larson and RENT.
Thanks all!
Well, Larson adapted Rent from La Boheme, and I've always read that he also adapted the characters names. Roger comes from Rodolfo (I *think* that's his name. I should know!).

Ah! That makes perfect sense. Thank you for such a quick answer too!

Its based on Rodolfo, a character in La Boheme. Yes, emcee, you are correct.
I don't know if the direct translation from Rodolfo is Roger, but maybe the name Roger stood out because of a friend. I dunno.
I think it's the closest name to Rodolfo that's still somewhat mainstream... because we wouldn't really want a pretty boy frontman named "Rudolph."
That would be the best.

A pretty boy frontman named Rudolph would have been absolutely hilarious. I think I would have enjoyed that a lot.
I guess its not very believable though...
I like ROdger better than Rudolph. There is something about the name that reminds me of reindeer.

Tonight at CBGB'S:
Rudolph Davis and the Christmas Raindeers of Rock!!!
"Tell the folks at home what you're doing Rudolph..."
he should be named Rolf like that crazy Hitler kid in Sound of Music. :)
Can you imagine Adam as a Rudolph? heh..funny thought
'Mimi still loves Rudolph. Is Rudolph really jealous, or afraid that Mimi's weak?'
Larson wanted Roger to consider being in Rent, acutally - when Jon was first writing the songs, he and Roger would sing what he had down and record and such. The character was originally named Ralph, but Jonathan changed it during the early creative process...Roger thought it might have been to sway him toward being in the show (which he really wasn't interested in), but he said he also could have misinterpreted that.
Ah, Seth's Chatterbox. Such a useful thing.
Rudolph
This is your mother
Rudolph, darling
I dont get these postcards..

Rudolph and Herbie the dentist = Adam and Anthony
Clarice = Mimi

Ah QuiteSo - you are fantastic! Thank you much for the information. I need to look into purchasing that Seth's Chatterbox video. I've been meaning to for some time now...
The random knowledge that people posess around here never ceases to amaze me. I read the thread, thought "oh someone will say that it's based on the names from La Boheme" and moved on with my day. Then I come back and find all this random stuff. Thanks for sharing.

"No with my father."
"I'm Rudolph."
"...um thanks for the light...im...gonna go now..."
What about Angel's name?
Angel Dumott Schunard.
It almost spells out AIDS. Is this just a coincidence?
yeah I always wondered if he was missing a 2nd middle name that would spell AIDS
I think Ralph is more amusing than Rudolph for some reason.
I NEVER noticed that Angel's name almost spells out AIDS..that's so interesting.
Schunard is the La Boheme character Angel's based on
I don't know if ADS is purposely related to AIDS, but it's an interesting thpught
