Questions about royalties and rights

My high school drama class is planning on doing a musical revue at the end of the school year or next fall, and I was kinda wondering if it would be legal. Someone told me that it's legal if you only do like two songs by one composer, but if you do more than two songs by one composer it's illegal. Is that true? Would it be legal to do any songs from any show? Right now we're planning on doing some from wicked, rent, chicago, and maybe some others, I'm just not sure if it's legal. So, what are the "rules" about putting together a revue?

"Let the little girl go, and that poor little dog? Dodo." That's my favorite line in the whole show (Wicked). My next favorite line is "Oh! It seems the artichoke is steamed."

Didn't Stephen Schwartz say that it was alright with him if you performed songs from Wicked, as long as it was under 4?

A company like MTI would know the specifics, but I remember once you could do under 20 minutes of a show and it is legal.

For some reason 3 songs as the maximum is jumping out at me
