Hi. I'm doing a paper for my religion course about alternative religions right now. I was researching Scientology and Bernadette Peters's name came up on a list of famous Scientologists. However, next to her name it said "unconfirmed". So, I figured I'd try to ask here: can anyone actually confirm whether or not she is a practicing Scientologist. Thanks, Jim
Scientology likes to call anyone who ever took a course or bought one of their books a "Scientologist" because it makes them look bigger than they really are. She may have looked into Scientology years ago, but I do not believe she is actually a Scientologist. She may have found out about Xenu and the body thetans.
Preliminary analysis suggests that about 60% of people who try Scientology do only a single course or service, that 80% of new members become inactive within 2 years, and that 65% of those who reach the level of Clear become inactive within a year after doing so. The older a list, the more likely that a person listed on it is no longer involved in Scientology.
Thanks Flamingo. I do believe there is a much more recent magazine interview perhaps from Bernadette's time in AGYG that specifically states she has no formal religion (was raised Catholic) but is spiritual. I just can't remember what the magazine was. I'm sure you of all people could find it.
Excerpt from "Spa Finder", 2000, interview titled "Being Bernadette Peters":
"In fact, she doesn't follow any prescribed system of eating, exercise, or self-actualization. She does, however, exercise daily, eat what's right for her, meditate, and practice a personal spirituality."
