Where did you find that picture?
Regarding whether or not it'll last, it's definitely a word of mouth show. Yesterday afternoon, the balcony was empty, as was 1/4 of the orchestra.

Regarding what courtnyj and bjh2114 said, the topic is VERY relevant. Echoing courtnyj's statements, we live in a world where African Americans consider people like Bill Cosby to be "anti-black" because he speaks out about how he feels black people should portray themselves. Without sounding racist, the conflict in Radio Golf is the same as the black community vs. people like Cosby, Obama, etc. Should blacks stay stay true to their roots or should they sell out to the white man?
While the usage of racial slurs (there's a debate about the meanings of "negro" and "n*gger,") is harsh at first, you realize that that is actually how people talk to each other: using those slurs. Growing up in the City, I'm no stranger to hearing "yo n*gga, wassup," though I can definitely see how it's off-putting to others. In the context of the play, I think it's very necessary and completely authentic.
It's very obvious how Wilson feels about the subject, it's very prominantly displayed throughout the piece.
AllForLaura - yes, you're certainly right - they've had the opportunity to work the piece so much that it does look very good. But, of course being a Devil's Advocate, I've seen plenty of shows that had tryouts and came to Broadway horrible.

Posted: 4/22/07 at 1:59pmI was there as well for the matinee and loved the show! While I could have benefited from viewing or reading August Wilson's previous shows, I think I caught on to most of the themes. Very well performed by all those involved. Really great production!

I saw the show last night and it was really thought provoking. I saw Gem of the Ocean last fall in Princeton so I definitely had to see Radio Golf. It's great story telling and really relevant. My favorite part was the dialogue between Sterling and Hicks towards the end of the second act. The theater was absolutely silent and you could feel the tension.
As for the actors, I felt that people who played Hicks and Barlow and the Elder were the ones who brought the show to life. Everything seemed slow and musty without them on stage.
I brought my 16 year old brother (first b-way show), who thought it was too long...I had to pepper him with questions to keep him awake/thinking, "What do you think will happen to the house?" "What do you want to happen?" "Whose side are you on?"

Your little brother and I have something in common (and I'm not 16, nor was it my first Broadway show, lol). :P

Oh, there was also a standing ovation at the end. Not the kind that's like, "Oh I can't see them taking their bows because someone is standing in front of me and I guess I should stand too."
Also, I think that there are many elements of the story that don't have to do with race that make it a good story. Harmond's search for identity beyond what his father wanted for him, Mame's tiny little story line, Harmond's struggle to do what's right...so there's a lot more in this story than race.

Posted: 5/6/07 at 12:59pmI was sitting in row A of the Mezz, which was pretty full. What I could see of the orch was pretty full too. A couple empty seats here and there...the balcony was the emptiest.
