Yup, that's after one week. I think Ragtime is getting so much negativity from bloggers because it's a great show. No one knows what's in the mind of the producers or what there strategy is but it is building steam and the money will come.
I think I'm getting tired of blogging on bway shows now.
I'm retiring.
Goldenboy I sympathize. It's frustrating enough that a show this strong and a production this good, having been enthusiastically endorsed by the critics, is having trouble building an audience. The vultures and seagulls here doing everything in their power to hasten its demise is ... baffling.
Another well-received revival, FINIAN'S RAINBOW is building an audience but very slowly. It has taken six weeks for the grosses to start approaching break-even, and fortunately the FR producers have been able to sustain it.
The producers of RAGTIME may not have as deep pockets. They also cut off a lot of the discounts and comps right after the reviews came out, instead of waiting to see how the audience was developing.
RAGTIME is a tougher sell. A more expensive show. A more "serious" show - not the kind of light entertainment that does well around the holidays. And, as I posted in my comments on this week's thread about the grosses, I suspect a lot of people in the New York area who wanted to see the show went to Washington and saw it there last spring.
It's not over with yet, but a decision will likely come down this week.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Goldenboy: your enthusiasm for Ragtime is commendable ... your grasp on the reality of the situation, well, not-so-much.
(1) "I think Ragtime is getting so much negativity from bloggers because it's a great show." WTF?
(2) what we do here is called "posting", not "blogging". if you actually do blog, you should share the link with us.
(3) a 1% increase in audience and a 17%+ decrease in take simply does *not* qualify as "building steam" ... no new show (let alone one with a cast and orchestra this size) can last on a house that's less than 60% full.
don't get my wrong -- i think Ragtime is genius, and i wish this production were soaring ... but the world is as it is, not as we wish it to be.

Well let me say this, whether you wanna get upset because I said "blog" instead of "post" is irrelevant to me. Let's not be sensitive ok. I'm quite aware that the majority of people who "post" on these sights are in no shows whatsoever, including myself.
So then, no matter what your facts are they are not the facts of the producers. There have been plenty of shows that have survived hard times and built their audience. Please, you act like Ragtime is making one dollar a week. No one knows how much it costs to run the show and no one knows how deep the pockets of the producers are.
Bottom line to it all, I'm not on here posting opinions of things I don't know. I'm posting things that I do know. Ragtime will pick up and good job Finians!

What's wrong with this picture? You say that no one knows anything, and yet YOU do? Why are you the exception. As you clearly state, "no one knows" - but then you create a thread that says RAGTIME IS BUILDING STEAM ?
What are you basing that on? I thought we didn't know anything, including yourself. So... in the end.... it's like you were arguing against yourself. So strange!

Well it's called an opinion just like you guys get on here and say things that aren't factual and really don't need to be said at all. I think I'm getting more of a kick of you guys responding to me which proves that you all get on here not only to go back and forth about things that you don't know about but get upset when someone tells you, that you don't know what you're talking about.
I never said that I was saying was the end all be all but it's apparent that whether the show is Ragtime or Notime, it's all opinion.
And I am sorry to say, according to this week's grosses you were way off the mark.
Also with a huge ensemble, and orchestra, it can't be cheap.

yeah, yeah ... i was snarky in the posting-vs-blogging thing, but -- really: who joins a Message Board on the a Thursday only to "retire" the following Monday?!?
OK, so here's a fact: if this show keeps "building steam" at NEGATIVE $75K A WEEK, the producers will be paying people to see Ragtime in about seven weeks!!!
(And -- again -- no axe to grind here; i dearly wanted this show to succeed.)

I totally understand where you are coming from. But we shall see...
GoldenBoy2- what you are saying doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Yeah, some people on this board don't see Broadway shows freqently because they are no where near the city. That doesn't mean that they don't hear stuff or go see the touring shows. Luckily for me though, I make it to the city 2-3 times on average to the city. You even admitted that you don't go.
What you said, is making what you're writing ironic.

Ironic? Go further...
Goldenboy is the definition of Hypocrisy.
Listen, Goldie - If you're going to post opinions that are NOT factually based, then don't even think about riding up on our butts (Mmhhmm) for doing the same. Practice what you preach. G'Damn!

It feels so good to see how I have rubbed you all the wrong way.
I'm still rooting for Ragtime all the way...biatches!
I don't think anyone in this thread is wanting Ragtime to fail. I think they're just being realistic.
Goldenboy2: "I think I'm getting tired of blogging on bway shows now.
I'm retiring."
Another false prediction .....
