RECS FOR MAY NYC VISIT?

I will be in NYC the end of May, and plan to see a batch of shows.

Currently my list of maybes is 16 shows long, so hopefully I can winnow that down a bit lol. The contenders: Hadestown (definitely), Oklahoma (excited for tonight's reviews!), Beetlejuice, Tootsie, Kiss Me Kate, Be more Chill, The Ferryman (definitely), The Prom (definitely), To Kill a Mockingbird, King Lear, Network, Betrayal, Gary, All My Sons, Burn This, Frankie and Johnny.

But I was hoping people can recommend any hidden theater gems or Broadway-esque type events that I may be missing.

Not living in NYC, it can be hard to stay in-the-know about the great Off-Broadway shows worth a slot in my schedule (a la The Wolves), fun dinner theater shows (a la 54Below) and cool one time events (a la Stars in the Alley). I swear, every time I visit, I come home to read about things I should have done while I was there!

So this time I am putting out feelers - any suggestions for great shows or events or activities that Broadway lovers might enjoy? I appreciate any ideas!!

Above all else, I recommend Fiddler on the Roof In Yiddish Off-Broadway.

Chita Rivera is playing 54 Below the last week of May - that should definitely be something to consider!

For the plays you listed, I’d see Network. I know it’s polarizing on these boards, but personally I think it’s worth it for Bryan Cranston’s performance and the overall production design alone. It was a unique show that I’m glad I experienced.

I echo those who said Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish. Beautiful production.

We just got back from NYC this week. Saw Kiss Me Kate Saturday and our entire group enjoyed it - thought it was very funny. King Lear...I didn’t have the same level of issues with it that other on these boards have had with the production, but it was easily the least of the seven shows I saw last week. If you’re a massive Glenda Jackson fan, go for it, but otherwise you might be better off elsewhere. Saw Network during its run in London and agree that Cranston’s performance alone is worth the price of admission. Glad you’ve got The Ferryman listed, because that was our favorite next to Fiddler.

Fiddler stands a solid chance of making the cut, because it has shows on some odd days with few alternatives. Same for Tootsie and Betrayal. Betrayal, in particular, I wouldn't otherwise see, but it is easy to squeeze it in.

The rest will come down to how excited I am at the prospect and seat availability. Same for 54 Below performances.

But I am really hoping to find "other" kinds of show experiences and events. If Fleabag had been showing during my dates, I totally would have gone to that. But it is also one of those things I only heard about here. It wouldn't have been on a regular list of performances to check out. I worry that there is something similarly awesome in May that I may not know about!
