Yeah, I don't think anyone thought it was going to win a lot - if anything. I thought maybe they'd win for sets and score, but Drowsy took both. I don't think Drowsy has that great of a score. But oh well.
I know where this person is coming from, though. All of the talk about Drowsy gettin' screwed, you want someone to say, "Color Purple should've won". Like I said above, I knew it wasn't gonna happen even though I was hoping for it. Good news for Color Purple fans is that it will probably run longer than all of the shows it was up against.
While I had hoped it would win Best Musical by some miracle, I am proud with its showing. No one was predicting it to win anything guaranteed anyway, so the best it could have done was an upset, which it pulled off.
Just be glad for LaChanze's win and that the show is a finanical success with many years left on its run.

I loved TCP, however there are too many inherent flaws within the design of the show..the score is a bit rushed and having LaChanze sing her big number at the end of the show doesn't seem to work. I think some of the songs are fantastic, overall the score hurt the show, and the book well...didn't really capitalize on the true essence of the real book. The Color Purple is a connection of the trials and struggles of one woman but reflected in a ripple effect of all the lives around her. I think if the book was tighter and stronger it would've been up there.

I hope LaChanze is still in the show come December (which I'm sure she will be) so I can see her Tony winning performance. Either way Color Purple will still make millions a week and out-sell the other shows.
Honestly, the biggest problem with The Color Purple (and this isn't a joke, even though it sounds like one) is the WIGS! The graying of the wigs throughout the span of the show doesn't work. Basically, Harpo ages much more quickly than everyone else, and Mister and Celie don't age at the same rate. It just doesn't match up.
I haven't seen the show but Harpo is older than Celie, right? From what I remember from the book and movie he is so that would explain why he gets older faster. No?
considering celie is like 14 when she meets mr. and he's well over 30. it's implied that he's way older and you shouldn't need a better wig to show you that.
Sofia is supposed to be YOUNGER than Celie?! Woah. It reads like she's 20 years older. The performance tonight read older still -- like she was some 50-year-old advising Celie.
Yes, I realize that people age at different rates, but just based on their entrances and exits, Harpo would remain the same age for a while, while Celie would be aging, and then she would stop aging and Harpo would suddenly look much older. It was just a little quirky. And bwayguy2, I remember Celei aging faster than mister. He doesn't look too old at the beginning, but then suddenly gets really old after Celie gets old. But he's way older, and should look way older sooner.
Anyway, as much as I do feel that Color Purple was snubbed, I wasn't expecting them to win anything, but I'm sure this is going to be the longest running show from this season.

- Barbra Streisand
I'm happy that LaChanze won, but I feel the composers let her down. They didn't give her a song that shows what she's capable of doing. She's the star of the show, yet, Felicia was the one who was featured last night.

THE COLOR PURPLE might have had a better shot at Best Score if people could have understood a SINGLE WORD being sung in the syrupy and over-arranged vocals.
COLOR PURPLE's score better than DROWSY? Hell, no!
Hell yes. Drowsy is a bore. Besides "Show off" the rest of the score is so bland and boring. At least Color Purple has some soul to it and some power.
And I agree Dot, they should have let LaChanze blow the roof off of Radio City, but I don't think the producers expected her to win. "I'm Here" would have been beautiful to see, or she could have sang "What about Love?"
