There's always a first. Bette needs an Oscar.
#28RE: Hello Dolly on Great Performances?
Posted: 8/30/18 at 5:06pmThe Oscar rumor is absolutely absurd.

''I was told that only the Dancing sequence featuring CS was filmed for inclusion with the archive. Not a entire Bernadette performance.''
You've been given some bum information. Theatre on Film and Tape shot Bernadette Peters' whole show, which includes Charlie Stemp, and the director of TOFT has confirmed this.

Kudos with the unnecessary name dropping on BWW. But as far as the cast is concerned only the new choreography was filmed with one single camera.

Posted: 8/30/18 at 6:36pmNot to disagree, but the Peters version revised not only the "Dancing" sequence, but the Polka Contest as well. That should have been caught on tape, too!

Yes! Let’s hope the London transfer and potential commercial release are true so that we can all enjoy forever . A archive recording does nothing for me. I love your posts Dollypop. I hope they continue.

I love HELLO, DOLLY! and wish that it had continued.
(You have no idea how depressed I am!)

Just plan on seeing the tour and a fun trip to Europe if the transfer occurs . Be happy this joy will continue being spread.

''Unnecessary name dropping''? As a journalist, I double-checked with Patrick Hoffman, the director of TOFT, to see what the facts were. And since he authorized and oversaw the taping, he confirmed that Bernadette's entire performance was filmed, not just the ''Dancing'' sequence. (And that was corroborated by BwayJudd's post in this same thread, ''per a cast member.'' )

Posted: 8/31/18 at 9:30amWayman is correct, and I’m not sure who they name dropped? The director of TOFT? Anyway, DollyPop is also right, they changed the polka contest too, and Bernadette’s title number had additional lyrics and I think, although I am not sure, that her choreography was slightly different as well. Regardless, it all was recorded. Seems a silly thing to argue about. I’m not sure who wouldn’t want both incredible performances archived.

Posted: 8/31/18 at 10:21amIt's not silly to those of us who are feverishly devoted to the show. I'm glad that both versions of the show have been preserved somewhere.

Posted: 8/31/18 at 11:01amFortunately, all 3 actresses have had their Dolly Levi Gallagher performances gorgeously captured unofficially so their performances can be viewed by the public, regardless. Judging by the excellent camerawork, it makes one wonder how these were achieved based on the ever-present ushers monitoring the audience at the Shubert Theatre.

Oh, I meant to silly to argue against both performances being taped! I’m also a huge fan of the show and saw all three Dolly’s multiple times!

That is nice. I do love how you say it was corroborated by BwayJudd. Well if he says it is true..LOL. No insult meant. Just that he is just a newish person around here. And that is cool that your a journalist. I have met lots of cool people here on BWW. Many well known theater professionals, some composers, even a well regarded music producer. An tons of great fans with very cool jobs and lives. Most of them have no need to toot their own horn to bring validity to the chit chat. And I agree with the statement that a archived recording is nice.. but of no use to me. Thank god for the wonderful unofficial archives that are out there. I love Hello , Dolly! I love Bette! Bernadette is a treasure and Donna is sublime. Everyone happy? Have a nice weekend everyone!
