RENT... Pre-Broadway?

let's just say that the NYTW was a work in progress.. thus being called a workshop. No it was not perfect and probably wouldn't have done AS well had that version been moved directly to broadway. Maureen had aids back in the first workshop.. everyone was sick but mark. Maureen had a lot more songs but, they weren't very strong songs..maybe because the actress playing maureen could not really do JL's music justice. The guy playing Roger was painful to listen to. I'm so glad that JL fixed it up and replaced "Real Estate" with "What You own" and took female to female out for "Take Me Or Leave Me".. also "You'll get over it" is much better suited as "Tango Maureen". While a song between Mark and Maureen would have been fun.. it just works better with Maureen being a diva and Joanne/mark b*tching about her. Updated On: 3/5/06 at 10:51 PM

Okay I have been reading the original libretto thanks to the link LizzieCurry provided (thanks!!) and I must say- first let me say I have loved RENT for years!! and I do believe in JL's genius BUT- I almost hate it. If you watch the documentary on the RENT DVD they do talk about how the workshop version did not have a clear storyline and I totally agree- If I didn't already know RENT I would not be able to follow it. Certain parts I like, Mark getting fired in the beginning and some of the lyric changes in the songs that are still in the broadway show now. However, the other songs- I am so glad they were cut. For one thing they are too rhyme-y if you know what I mean. They just don't fit in with the other songs that are so amazing, and I don't know I just like it so much better. I just wonder why they rhymed so much?? I mean the songs in the production now have some rhyming but more in a musical sense, not the way some of these other songs were. Oh well, just my opinion- please ignore if it offends you. I just don't think I would have loved RENT as much if I had seen the workshop production re: RENT... Pre-Broadway? so sad

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have been listening to the workshop version and I can not believe how different it sounds. What is up with Benny? His "Do a Little Business" routine sounds like the Music Man. Ugh... I'm so glad the tempo was upped, some of the songs are painfully slow. And now I understand what everyone was talking about in regards to Roger's "singing." Thank God for Adam Pascal!

Roger sounds like Trey Parker when he does his lousy rock singer schtick. Collins kind of sounds like Kirk Van Houten, Milhouse's dad on The Simpsons. Apparently Collins and Mark were written in the vein of Joe Cocker and Michael Stipe respectively... I'm not really hearing the Joe Cocker part though.

I think the part in "Splatter" where they do the "You okay honey?" "I'm afraid so." "They get any money?" "No!" part is the funniest thing I've ever heard. They sound so angry.

I just don't think I would have loved RENT as much if I had seen the workshop production

Well, exactly. That's why it was billed as a "work-in-progress" at the time. You aren't supposed to be as enthralled with the workshop production.

"Right Brain" is quite possibly one of the worst songs I've ever heard. I have this image of Tony Hoylen (NYTW Roger) as this fifty-year-old balding man puffing away on his last cigarette.

I want to see a picture!

And his Another Day...wow. He sounds like he just woke up. He has no emotion in his voice at all.

Right Brain makes me laugh.

I tried using process of elimination to figure out which one was him in those NYTW Rent Bible photos to no avail.

Right Brain is so skeevy.

I love how Benny sounds like a robot, though. "The towtruck Allison, the towtruck Allison the towtruck towtruck towtruck..."

Yikes.

Hee, the "through her thighs" part, Lexi? That is skeevy.

I tried looking at the Rent Bible to find him, but I just don't think he's in any of the pictures. It's driving me crazy. Maybe someone should PM Anthony and ask for a picture, lol. :P

The whole "I bought another" "then another" "and I need to buy one more!" made me crack up. The rhymes are so forced sometimes that it is painful. re: RENT... Pre-Broadway?

And you'd think if someone was towing away your car, you'd be a little more "stressed" and panic more than just repeating the word towtruck over and over again.
