Posted: 8/19/04 at 2:21pmWhat is everyone's opinion on the upcoming RENT movie under the direction of Chris Columbus? I have read a lot of recent information on it, and it supposedly will be done with unknown actors and singers. What do you think of this musical to movie situation? And, if you had any say, who would you put in some of the key parts (famous actors or broadway actors, or even original cast). Let me know, I'm interested and a huge RENT fan.

Posted: 8/19/04 at 2:32pmI don't think it will work as a movie, but I could be proven wrong. Whether or not the movie blows, RENT will always have it's fans (like me) who will worship it no matter what.

I've expressed my opinion on this already, but what the hell.
I don't think a movie version of Rent is a bad idea, I think a movie version directed by Chris Columbus is a bad idea. Make that a god-awful, horrific, nighmarish idea. He's one of the most boring and blase director in Hollywood, he'll turn it into blockbuster mush.

That is what I think. That came from me, not someone else. But, if you want more, here it goes.
I don't think Columbus should direct it. I think someone who has their roots in low-budget films who make great movies with little cash (like Mark). All a big Hollywood director is going to do is make it flashy, which is not what it needs. And since the stage is so minimal, they are going to have to add some different dialogue and locations to make it an actual movie (which I am not to fond of).

i think rent would make an amazing movie in the right hands, whether or not chris columbus is capable remains to be seen.
as far as a movie version ruining rent's "bohemian" qualities..u can just fuggedaboudit... the show lost its "bohmeian" quality when it moved to broadway and the merchandising went into over-kill.
does anyone here own a "rent" coffee mug? LMAO
dont get me wrong, i love the show. but rent is as "slick" as any other bway show out there....

I cringed at the thought of a Rent movie until I saw the commercial for Broadway/tours. I can't find the thread w/ the link, but the commercial was filmed like a film trailer instead of a "typical" theatre ad. The cinematography, lighting, style, etc was exactly how I'd hope a Rent movie would be made (aside from the corny bouncy walking down the sidewalk at the end). If the movie's made like that, I'm all for it.
On the other hand, having Mr. "Doubtfire" directing makes me want to cry. I was thinking Baz Luhrmann still would've been the best director, but I think while he'd give it a great style, he'd also glam the show up too much.
Edited: Here's the link to the Rent commercial. You need QuickTime to view it. Enjoy! :)

im sure all on this board that are :: so against :: a RENT movie are probably echoing the same sentiments when the following shows were being announced as films:
WEST SIDE STORY
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
OLIVER
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
CHICAGO
CABARET
FUNNY GIRL
.. its the same old "song & dance": "it'll never make a good movie, they'll ruin it...yadda, yadda, yadda..."
more often than not there have been decent movie versions of shows and in some cases extraordinary versions of the shows have been commited to film. my personal favorite happens to be "WEST SIDE STORY".
i hope all the nay-sayers are seriously proven wrong when this thing finally hits the silver screen, if only to preserve a truly great show on film...

I don't know about Chris Columbus directing the movie...
I think the movie will, overall, work very well on screen.
I would be more interested in a director such as Baz Luhrmann tackling the show; I think that would be a very interesting, appropriate vision.
Anyone have any thoughts on that? I mena, of course, Columbus has been deemed the director and I doubt that will change--but so many people seem to have a problem with him. I don't know enough about him to care one way or the other.
But, who do you think should direct the movie?

Darren Aronofsky. He directed "Requiem for a Dream" and "Pi". His dark, fast-editing style and tight control of film narrative would be perfect for Rent.
Spike Lee is another obvious choice.

The RENT movie is gonna be fine. I think it does need to be changed. Putting RENT 'as is' on screen won't do it justice. It needs to be adjusted, songs need to be cut, the cinematography needs to have style, and that way hopefully it'll be noticed among many and be one of the few shows that wins a Tony and an Oscar. I'd much rather see it Hollywood-ized and win awards then have it be another stage to screen job of a musical that falls into the $5.99 bin at the video store.
CHICAGO and MOULIN ROUGE smoothed the plain for movie musicals, but both of these appealed to a contemporary audience by their style, plot and songs. It wasn't truly 'book musical follow the song for the plot' movies, they were great dialogued productions with catchy tunes interwoven. That's what RENT needs to be, because that's what audiences are used to.
CHICAGO and ROUGE already showed that musicals taking that direction can succeed admirably with audiences today, PHANTOM will show the different approach which most likely will be a more grandiose version of the stage production on screen. A follow the songs for plot version.
As for Columbus, he did fight for saving aspects of Harry Potter that he felt were neccessary to plot structure. So, maybe he wouldn't want to change much in Rent. Hopefully he'll know how to tastefully direct it. He took the job, so that to me shows he's up for the challenge.
