On my way to work today I was zoning out and thought to myself, "I wonder if the RENT movie would/could ever become an interactive show like the ROCKY HORROR movie?" I think it would be kind of a cool idea. Thoughts? And if this has totally been discussed before, sorry.
Yes when Angel dies everyone will through their wigs into the air.... Seriously, ROCKY HORROR is a parody of B movies. RENT is a little more serious.
Maybe not as interactive as throwing toast at the screen or anything, but I could see people getting up and dancing to La Vie Boheme, lighters during light my candle, etc... (this would be at a dedicated "interactive show" not an everyday showing of RENT) and of course Mooing with Maureen!

I don't know if it has ever been discussed, but I remember it being mentioned.
Originally I didn't think that it could acheive the cult-like status that the Rocky Horror Picture Show has. But after seeing how much interest there is in the movie six months before its going to be released I think that the RENT movie could become a cult-like film, giving birth to millions of more Rentheads, and thus, someday, turn into an interactive movie.
I can see it now: an enitre audience of Rentheads wearing the plaid pants, the black and white striped scarf, the Santa Clause coat, while mooing during Over the Moon, jumping up and dancing during La Vie Boheme, and clapping their hands during Seasons of Love.
Oh yeah, I DEFINITELY think it has possibilities.
Maybe not plaid pants though
Maybe mullets instead

Oh yeah, the audience would be like a sea of Farrah Fawcett-Bon Jovi hair!

I don't necessarily want it to happen, but I could see it. It would be fun as well. But I think the show is a little too serious to become a joke like that.
"I think that I dropped my stash"
Everyone yells "Here, bitch!" and throws heroin in the air.
LOL. There is only one movie like ROCKY HORROR and anything that even tries to copy that experience is going to be sadly lacking. And any movie that deals with something as serious as AIDS doesn't lend itself to that kind of fun. If anything, HEDWIG would be the next film to even come close.
Supposedly they're going to try and do Moulin Rouge like Rocky Horror here in Chicago?
they already did moulin rouge in orlando.
from what i saw, it sucked ass.
The thing that I don't think a lot of people here understand is that the Rocky Horror experience evolved over time. It wasn't that someone just sat down one night and wrote out all the shout-outs throughout the film.

i could definitely see this happening... during the HAPPY parts. i would probably get pretty pissed if people tried anything during the funeral.
but i don't have a good imagination and i can't come up with stuff people would do...
The Rocky Horror experience will NEVER happen with a new film again. As Matt says that whole thing evolved over time, and in an era before VCRS and DVDs when it was common for films to play long theatrical engagements.

Oh lord. If people start shouting out lines during the film when I'm there, they're getting their popcorn dumped over their heads.
Well, the Rent tour did have a midnight show in DC, and the people from CB did cheer at Mark's shout-out. And many people already show up in Mark scarves, so the show might be on it's way there, but I'm not sure if the movie will have the same effect.
Rocky Horror is a spoof and "tribute to bad sci-fi films.
Rent is a "tribute" to life.
thats never gonna happen. ROCKY HORROR is the only show that could ever pull it off.
NO NO NO NO NO...that would be so wrong on so many levels. Like Matt_G pointed out the ROCKY HORROR phenomenon evolved over time. It wasn't something the big wigs over at 20th Century-Fox dreamed up. In all reality, "Rocky Horror" was a huge box office dud when first released and it didn't achieve it's cult following until well over a year after it's initial outing and then only in midnight showings. "Rocky Horror" is unique unto itself.
Studios nowadays are trying to "create" this kind of atmosphere for someof their older films and it's really not catching on because it's so pre-meditated. Fox did it to "The Sound of Music" about five years ago. Disney did it to "Mary Poppins" and MGM/UA tried it with "West Side Story". Only "Sound of Music" had some success but it's died down since.
Hopefully they won't do this with "RENT"
