so....I'm driving down 111 today, windows down, with RENT blaring in my cd-player. And suddenly I wondered.....will the movie follow the musical EXACTLY? I mean with the Christian Right trying to tell most of us we're wrong, will they perhaps tone down some of the F-words, or AIDS references, etc....I mean i can just see them trying to say it's a gay movie, and turning it into something ugly. What do you think?
I hope they change nothing, because as usualy when I listen to RENT, by the time I got to Palm Desert, I was sobbing.......
I highly doubt that they'll be changing much of it. The show has such a fan-base and so much is expected from it. There aren't that many big "names" in it, but it's a very high-profile movie. And all the Rent-heads will have coniptions if it's changed.
The script has changed quite a bit since the original incarnation of the screenplay adaptation, but word has it that the actual version being used for filming (though still a bit of a work in progress) is much closer to the libretto than previous versions.
Profanity is DEFINITELY still in. I think the only big song that's probably not appearing is Contact. It's so metaphorical that it probably wouldn't translate too easily to film anyway, aside from the subject matter.
I used to hate this movie with everything I had, as a big fan of the show as is, and didn't want it to happen. I had plans to avoid it like the plague, even though I knew I'd end up at least giving it a chance. I saw the shoot on two separate days, and have almost absolute faith that this thing is going to work.
I wrote two big posts on what I saw if you'd be interested to see them. They're kind of buried. Let me know.
Wonderful......that's good to hear Luv. I am so hyped for this.
Anthony posted about how the movie has become much more like the show than it had originally started.
it better not be rated R or i'll have to sneak in!
I think it's almost definitely R, isn't it?
Get read to sneak, CQT.
You can go with me. I'll get you in CQT. It's definitely gonna be rated R.

It is automatically rated R with all of the profanity (usage of the Fword) and drug usage...and nudity (and everything that goes with that)
Columbus was already quoted for saying that this will be his first rated R movie
It is a little obvious that it would be rated R...and this will be the first R rated Musical
I'm hoping for a PG 13 just so more teenagers can see it and discover Rent for themselves. Seems weird that they can see the show in person but not the film.
Nudity???
I think it was already said that it will definately be 'R'.
From the filmnimg Thursday, what I am assuming to be the opening lines had the "F" word atleast 5 times and other forms of profanity on top of that, in about 3 sentences.
Hope for nudity? Ha. :)
Oh baby.
I'm hoping for a PG 13 just so more teenagers can see it and discover Rent for themselves
R rated movies don't exactly stop teenagers nowadays...it's not a whole lot to worry about
This movie needs to be R, if it's going to keep the atmosphere of RENT. You're talking about a time and place when you couldn't walk down the block without being offered every drug on the planet, and a movie that almost BEGINS with 'f*ck.'
Exactly.
I've been worried a lot about what songs have been cut for like the last month. I read on here that Anthony posted a list of what's in the film, but i can't find it. If someone could post a link to that I'd appreciate it, or at least just tell me whether 'Christmas Bells' and 'OTM' are supposed to be in.
I don't see how OTM could not be in the movie but I haven't heard anyone talk about them filming that song; however,
I keep hearing that Christmas Bells was cut (so sad... one of my favorites, but i guess the filmmakers can't please everyone). I saw photos of Collins and Angel looking at coats so i got optimistic. That song just sticks out in my mind as being so unforgettable from when I saw it in NYC.
Thanks,
Jason

TheActr, All of Anthony's posts have been compiled at http://www.forget-regret.net/anthony/oct_04.php. There isn't a final version of what songs are in and out. Anthony has noted that the script keeps changing, so they are uncomfortable giving any "final" listings right now, understandably. As the others have said, the voice mails are out and Contact -- though the "Angel" part of Contact is one of my favourite 1-minute segments of the show, so this makes me very sad.
Hope that helps!

in replying to the nudity in question...in scripts that have been circulating...Roger and April steamy shower scene in FLashbacks during Glory, The Tango with Mark/Maureen/Joanne. Mimi and Benny and Mimi and Roger
use imagination kids...:)
It is 110% going to be rated R, if not the MPAA is going to have a field day to make sure that it is
i read somewhere that they show mimi at the catscratch club, and angel jumps up onstage with her. ???!! random

i was expecting the movie to be rated R. i mean since it has A LOT of raw scenes i would expect it to be R material. with all the things that relate to real life like drugs and disease etc., since real life is rated R to me, how can Rent not be rated R?
kas- In one version of the screenplay "I wanna go out tonight" was sung by Mimi while performing at the club. In the middle of the song another stripper, dressed the same as Mimi comes on and sings with her. When they finally strip everyone realizes that it is Angel.
The song is just called "Out Tonight," and I think Mimi is still performing it in the Cat Scratch. I have no idea if Angel is still a part of that scene, but I heard there was extras casting for drag queens, and someone suggested that it might be for the Cat Scratch scene. The original premise was to have Roger go to the club with the others, and for Another Day to be after he gets upset and leaves. *shrug* I wish I knew what was still in and what wasn't. Soon enough...
