How does RENT have a terrible message?
The school edition isn't bad at all, the one I saw actually was better than the national tour at that time, but I worry now that its becoming a less exclusive thing to get the rights too.
The worst change is definitely:
"New York City,
Center of the universe,
Times are gritty,"
Awful. Everything else? Not bad. Except "mucho medication".

I agree Race has nothing to do with the show. And drug use is in the show but it not the key of the story. Really it not the key story of RENT. RENT is about Friendship and a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village and the AIDS epidemic. I am auditioning for this version and can't wait to be in it. On the site http://www.mtishows.com/show_home.asp?ID=000305
it says "This adaptation has been carefully done, working with the Larson estate to retain the dramatic intent of the groundbreaking rock musical, and consists of minimal changes to language and the removal of one song (CONTACT) to make it possible for many schools to perform this piece"
