Posted: 11/24/05 at 12:40amNow that most of you have seen the movie, I'm curious to hear your advice for my RENT dilemma. I have never seen RENT on Broadway, and now I need to choose between my initial RENT experience consisting of seeing the movie or seeing the current stage production. I am only asking because I have heard that the current broadway cast is not that good, and the movie will obviously give me the opportunity to see most of the originals. Which experience do you believe will be best for someone in my situation?

they're two different animals entirely. personally, i would see the show first. it has much less scenery/props, and although the simplicity of the show is gorgeous, i think after the movie you will be disappointed.
also, the show is much more emotional. nothing beats live performance.

i think it depends on whether or not youre willing to wait to see it. the one issue with seeing it live (and the cast when i saw it) is that they are not the originals and at times they are very hard to understand. when i saw it, i understood NONE of out tonight or goodbye love. the movie provides more insight to mimi and it better develops the characters, and there are more humorous moments. there is one crucial bit of info about rogers past that isnt in the movie. but its all up to you. they are both amazing, the movie is so full of energy, something i hear the current broadway cast is lacking (i saw in july, wasnt that bad but the movie had more energy).
hope that helps.
EDIT: its also much cheaper to see the movie first. but i do agree with what BEKA531 said, you might be disappointed if you see the show after b/c of how simple it is.

i just got back from seeing the movie..and my personal preference is seeing this show live...of course the sound system in my local movie theater in upstate NY SUCKED....ok...brace yourselves...IT WAS IN MONO!!!! no surround sound!! AWFUL...i was crushed by that.
i loved the movie the performances were outstanding....i would even say oscar worthy...jesse l. martin is not to be missed in this...and i am not a fan of his...adam was AMAZING...he translated the character sooo well to the big screen as did anthony rapp..i was very impressed by both of them and only wished that i had had a chance to see the show in NYC when they were still in it.
and how much did i LOVE idina in this? so wonderful...roasario dawson was also very impressive. i thought she was amazing...i was very disappointed in the way Today for You, Tomorrow for Me was filmed ...too much jumping around and out of camera range not edited well and i don't think that he was really showcased as well as he could have been in that song. in the live production it is a complete showstopper and i felt that the movie lost the brilliance of that performance.
anyway..those are my thoughts! all in all..i LOVED it ....but see the stage version first for sure!
ps..what was the background thing on roger that was missing from the movie? i didn't notice and now i am dying to know...i loved Glory and how they showed April...

i'm all in support of live theatre but should i take it that you meant that film actors don't work for their performance?
