Just got home. By far, the BEST performance of Rent I've seen. It was my 4th time seeing it- won lotto. There were about 50 people there for lotto (for people who were wondering). The completely messed up EVERBODIES tickets- Ex: I was giving BB 102 & 104 & everybody was given every other ticket & so on but people just changed seats in the theatre.
Christopher J Hanke- he was the main reason why I wanted to see the show as I had seen him in In My Life (which I find funny that he didn't list in his bio in the playbill haha). He started off VERY weak in the begining when he explains what's happening in the story BUT was AMAZING. He's a great singer and his acting was incredible. It was so weird seeing him and I couldn't help but think "lemon" quite often during the show.
Tim Howar- He's improved SO much since I saw the show last February. I was very scared today to see him because last time I saw him, he was all over the place and very loud. Today he fit the role perfectly. Funny thing: During La Vie Boheme, he went over to the table where Benny is and took the glass & like flicked the water out behind him and it hit the conductor and the conductor looked SO lost. He had the expression on his face "Um...what hit me?!?" It was funny but coulda been bad since he was playing the keyboard, etc.
Jaime Lee Kirchner- I was excited to see "the new Mimi". The start of Light My Candle was very weak and I felt I wasn't gonna like her. Her Out Tonight was so incredibly like AMAZING. She did 2000 bends and turns when she balanced herself on the bars in the begining. WOW. Without You was kinda slow though.
Understudy for Maureen: Haven Burton. WOW. Why isn't she in the show as regular Maureen? Nobody was able to tell she was an understudy. Her Over The Moon was weak but her chemistry between every charcter, Take Me or Leave Me, La Vie Boheme was just amazing. She really had tears running down her face when she gave her speech at the funeral. I really was blown away from her.
Understudy for Joanne: Crystal Monee Hall. The first thing I thought: "Wow I really hope the chemistry is good between understudies..." but she was good! Amazing? no but she can deffinitly sing and act. I really liked her "We're Okay".
I was glad to see Karmine Alers go on but it was for Frenchie Davis. I saw Frenchie was out so I got alittle upset but all my friends have been bragging about Karmine when they saw her as Mimi. She was great...I mean she didn't have a big part but her Seasons of Love solo was great! She put her complete different twist on it and made it very enjoyable.
Great afternoon. I'd give it a 9/10.
Edit: haha yay I win for horrible writing
Just to add in- got Chorus Line tickets today for January. VERY excited!

Posted: 10/7/06 at 9:58pmHaven was the understudy for Maureen on the Benny tour. She has been doing the role for years. She's fantastic.

I really want to see Haven. But more, I am so jealous that you got to see Karmine in as the soloist! From what I have seen of her she totally makes everything her own and I would love to hear what she does with that solo!
Also glad to hear that you thought Tim was better than the last time you saw him. When I saw him (back in . . . April maybe?) I didn't love or hate him but my sister had very strong negative feelings about him. I would like to see how he has settled into the role.
Anyway, glad you had fun!

Posted: 10/8/06 at 12:46amI really need to re-visit this show. Unfortunately, I did not get to see the original cast. I was living here in Denver and was not traveling back east. (Where I am from) I did get to see the 1st national tour and loved it. I think the next time I am in New York (This spring) I am going to have to see it. I walk by the theatre every time I am there but always have a list of other shows to see.
