But I was thinking more AESTHETICALLY the movie would have been incredible... I didn't put much thought into what he'd do with the talent, since no one was cast when he was thinking of directing.

It certainly would have been interesting to see what they'd have done with it, but I think it likely that either of their versions of RENT would have been much more their visions and less Jonathan Larson's than this will be. There's nothing wrong with that, either, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the OBC in what I think of as a film translation of the stage show. Maybe later on someone else can make a more radical adaptation - god knows Hollywood is happy to remake anything and everything.
I'm also looking forward to someday seeing a different production of the show - see what another stage director might make of it.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 3:49pmThe movie will most likely be rated R, but as someone mentioned earlier you never know what the studios will pressure to change, especially since it WILL affect ticket sales. While some people's parents are all nice or some kids are willing to be all sneaky, overall the young teens probably won't get out to see it. It might be a better film if it's rated R (or if it weren't being directed by Chris Columbus...) but it's going to be a less lucrative one. I hope they didn't spend too much money on it.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 4:05pmI've been thinking about this since my last post. I don't think it's going to MATTER so much what it's rated. Yeah, some kids won't get to see it. Those that do, and the adults that do, will make up for it by seeing the movie over and over again. I think if the movie got toned down to a PG-13 it wouldn't be as good, thereby losing some of that repeat business...

I know what you mean, jason, but I just don't see that happening on a large scale with ticket prices being as exorbitant as they are...

I'll cuddle with you, Wax Lion.
.... back to regularly scheduled debate. I'm debated-out. (I will quickly say that if the rating IS brought to PG-13, I really hope people don't all jump up and whine about how they absolutely know it's lost everything etc etc. I mean, aren't we already relatively certain those sex scenes in the original script were cut, and such?)
