RENT will be rated...what?
re: RENT will be rated...what?#50

R. Definately R.
Drug use and sexual content.

Dang! It's probably R! Y?!!
Y?... Beacause it MUST be! I don't want a softened, watered down approach to this material... and I doubt anyone reading this board does either. It can't be like that. Trust me, although you may lament the fact that you may have to work a little harder (aka- find a way to sneak in), you will appreciate the finished product more in the long run.

Well said, TheActr (btw, I love Brighton Beach!).
I am 15, turning 16 a couple of days after the RENT movie comes out. But I WANT this to be rated R b/c, otherwise, it wouldn't be true to the material. My mom will be taking me too it the first time (she's also going to wear a shirt that she bought at Chico's that says "Santa Fe" on it, b/c that's her favorite song... :-P), and then she'll be buying my friends and I tickets.
If your parents have a problem w/you seeing it (and in no way would I encourage this if it wasn't the RENT movie
), buy a ticket to a PG-13 movie and then just go into the theatre playing RENT (i.e. sneak in!).
R is the right rating for this movie.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 11:46amAre theaters really so strict about IDing people for R movies?...I can remember several times when I was under 17 that I saw R movies without a parent...namely Hannibal...maybe its my town, half these theaters are employed largely by teenagers anyway...

R.
i'm 14 and my parents are letting me see it even though they don't know much about the show (they know its not very appropriate and will be rated R though)... i saw bewitched with my mom and totally flipped out when the rent trailer came on... thats the night when my mom was like ya, you can see it
my RENThead friend's mom said she would take all of us crazy people.
YAY

i dont see it as a big deal being R.
PG/PG-13 rating is what people go for on HUGE BLOCKBUSTERS, so they can get the entire audience.
I really dont see it effecting the profits that much.

Well, there go my chances of getting to see it. My mother won't even let me watch the rare PG-13 flick, and I'm *13*.
Ah well, what the hey. I'll con my friends into going to see the new Harry Potter movie, (they don't read the books, so that might be hard, but I'll try!) and sneak into Rent.
It'll be worth a try, anyway.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 1:26pmhee hee. I see according to those ratings that on a scale of 0-100 where 100 = "suitable", 101 Dalmations only got a 87 (this is a G-rated cartoon, mind you) and 8 mile got a 20. This should be fun *rubs hands together gleefully*

Wax Lion wants everyone to know the latest on the rating. As you all know, it's NOT rated yet. There might be some ground-breaking changes made on the RENT movie as far as the MPAA is concerned, but as it stands and if there is no progress, it will be rated "R". Wax Lion wishes he could go into further detail, but rest assured that the younger RENTheads are not being discounted and everyone is working hard FOR YOU!

Wax Lion

You know, my parents when I was younger never paid attention to ratings. If there was a movie that I wanted to see, unless it was something that was just explicit sex or violence for its own sake, they would let me go. Something like Rent, there is NO WAY my parents would have denied me seeing it!
Adam Corrola said on his show the other night something along the lines of "Movies and TV and video games don't make people go out and commit acts of violence. Stupidity makes make people go out and commit acts of violence." And he's right. I've been watching "adult" movies my whole life pretty much, and I would NEVER do the things we see in movies.
The school district I teach in now has basically completely banned all R rated movies from the classroom. This means my friend, a social studies teacher, can't show Glory in his room when he teaches The Civil War. The school was in an uproar over this decision. It basically says that we as teachers (even with approval of parents!) can't make a decision for the good of the students. I have kids who would LOVE for me to be able to take them to see Rent - I know they're going to ask. I won't be able to, of course. BUT, I also know that their parents WILL let them see it (since I know a lot of them have seen the show already). I guess what I'm getting at is that while it SHOULD be up to parents to determine if their kid can watch a movie, I would also hope that most parents, like mine did, would take the INDIVIDUAL child into consideration, not just a rating but on by a group of people who they don't know.

Wax Lion's ability to speak in the third person never ceases to amaze me.

Marvin: Speaking in the third person is actually normal for wax lion's like myself. Unfortunately, when we get mad or go off on a rant, the third person leaves us. So, it's quite ironic that our language only becomes tolerable when we're blazin' mad. Sometimes we speak with a hispanic accent, too. It's purely natural.
Ad-Lib: Wax Lion has the hots for Aslan. Do you know him personally? Is he single? On that note, is anyone up for a date with Wax Lion? He's a little lonely, and is craving a cuddle monger.
Jasonf: You obviously grew up with parents that understood and accepted the arts. That's cool. Wax Lion's parents were the same way. It's absolutely a crying shame that there are some *amazing* pieces of cinema that we can't share in classrooms. The more things change, the more they stay the same...
Love,
Wax Lion

Posted: 8/18/05 at 2:27pmOh, I know Aslan very personally, Wax Lion, and he's quite the fascinating creature and has no god complex, much to everyone's joy. He is single, actually, and I think that he and you would get along fine, as you both have your cryptic moments. My only fear is that, as you are but a mere four inches tall, he might accidentally crush you in one of his paws. That being said, I'm quite a bit smaller than Aslan, and I would gladly go on a date with you.

ljay889: IMDB says Y tu mamá también is rated R. Not NC 17.
The edited DVD release is rated R (I know this, because I accidentally rented that cut version from Blockbuster). However, the theatrical release and unedited DVD release is rated NC-17 (I know this, because it's the version I now OWN) -- it's rated that for obvious reasons. I'm not just making it up.
anyway, this has NOTHING to do with this thread, I was just correcting the comment. Continue :)

Guys, this is Chris Columbus. Have you seen the trailer?
If any film featuring drug use and sex could get down to PG-13, it's one with as cheesy and heartwarming a trailer as RENT's.
At least it's crowd-pleasing. I just would have liked to see a young director with a more edgy visual take and tone. But I digress.
re: RENT will be rated...what?#73

Yeah, the trailer is rather cheesy, but the MPAA doesn't rate films based on their trailer... so I don't think that will sway them any. If ANYTHING, it'll just sway the parents of pre-teens who are begging them to see that movie.
And I sort of agree about the more edgy take... While I adore Chris and feel he's going to do justice to the show, I remember when I heard that Spike Lee was attached to the movie at one point... damn! That would have been incredible! He has such an original and incredible, raw creative style. Would have been one helluva a movie!
