Posted: 1/23/09 at 12:57pmI actually think Spacey is a better choice than Jackman. More damaged/tortured and less pretty boy. It would be easier to believe his fall from grace. Can't wait to hear who's going to be Esther/Vicki!

To me, Spacey only ever comes across as creepy. So it doesn't seem there's much grace to have fallen from.
I don't know that he has the requisite charm to make those around him still care even as he disintegrates.

"He also sometimes works in the film industry".
I suppose that's the writer trying to be clever. He has two Oscars.

Posted: 1/23/09 at 1:56pmThe Brits have Spaceyitis. I wish they'd just keep him. I think he's a fabulous actor who turns me off every time I see him.
A click for life.

Thank you Reginald and Mamie...I used to like him and now just find him really creepy.
He is more age-appropriate, but it could make the casting of Esther a little more dicey. They need to look more like a semi-convincing couple and less like Spacey and Mena Suvari in "American Beauty."

The British theatre's gain has been American cinema's loss.
We've lost more of Spacey's crap performances. A loss I find particularly easy to bear.
Bye, Kevin. No need to come back. No, really. No need at all.

Posted: 1/23/09 at 2:50pmI just re-read what I wrote. I could have added that Jackman could be a lousy actor (he's not) who turns me ON every time I see him.

I think Jackman is too young looking for the role - I can't see him as a washed-up boozed-out actor, but Spacey has none of the matinee idol charm - but he looks perfectly dissapated.
I'm with Roscoe. I do think Spacey was hot during his "Usual Suspects" phase, but since AMERIUCAN BEAUTY he's brought self-loathing and sleaziness to a new level. He should stick to dog-walking.

Different tastes, I guess. I really liked Spacey in "A Moon for the Misbegotten." Vulnerable, talented and sweet beneath the alcoholic self-indulgence. Norman Maine strikes me as a similar character.
And I don't see Esther/Vicki as a kid anyway. She's one of those "overnight sensations" who's been working small, obscure nightclubs for years. So she needs to have some wear on her. Mid to late 30s seems right. Garland was 32 and Streisand 34 when they played the role.

I have to admit, lovesclassics, I've never seen him onstage. I wonder if I'd like him better.
And that's a good point about the female lead.

Reg,
It's possible that he comes across better on stage. I know that many of the film characters he's played are pretty icky.
I thought his chemistry with Eve Best was wonderful. During his breakdown, I was sobbing uncontrollably. My heart absolutely ached for him.
I know others didn't like some of his choices for Tyrone, but I thought he was very powerful.

Emily Skinner, Debbie Gravitte or Alison Fraser? All pushing 50!
It would be nice to see a true unknown in the role.

Or someone who's career is similar to Esther's.
Immense talent, star quality, knocking around the biz for years in lots of roles, but just never had THE breakthrough.
Could be a nice story - a star is born with A Star Is Born.
Edit: Just checked the ages for Gravitte, Fraser and Skinner. Wow. Can't believe both Gravitte and Fraser are 54! Skinner is only 39, though.

Posted: 1/23/09 at 8:47pmYou know the only thing that might make this interesting is if they cast a young hunk (mmmmm, Austin Miller? Nick Jonas?) as VIC Lester.
