Ay Caramba! A live theatrical version of Twentieth Century Fox's RIO is currently in the works, and according to today's Wall Street Journal, may be Broadway-bound!
Broadway producer Michael Cohl, who took over as lead producer of the recently shuttered "Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark", has inked a licensing deal with Twentieth Century Fox to bring two of the studio's hit films, RIO and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED, to the stage. "I just picked up the phone one day and we started talking, and after a long courtship, longer than my girlfriend and I, it worked out," says Cohl.
According to the report, the 'Alvin' production will be a "family-oriented live show", set to tour theaters across America beginning this winter. The live theatrical version of 'Rio' will appropriately premiere in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, just in time for the beginning of the 2016 Olympics taking place in that city. Describing the show as "Fox's "Lion King", Cohl revealed that he intends to bring the show to Broadway following that run.

I could see Rio as a live arena show similar to Ice Age but not on Broadway. Michael Cohl being involved as producer is never a good sign.

I loved Rio (but hated the second one), so I'll give this a chance. But, this could bomb badly.
Now you see why I am blaise about the state of Broadway.

Well, I could see the production being pretty spectacular, but I think this would be more fitting as a 40 minute show at a theme park a la the FINDING NEMO musical.

Well, that's embarassing. 'Ay, Caramba' is spanish! You would think after the past few years where Brazil and Rio have been in the news, media outlets would know by now that they speak Portuguese
Why are people still giving Michael Cohl a chance? These will fail as long as he's involved. He's just awful. When will people learn?
One marvels at instincts this consistently terrible.

I'm Brazilian and I was thinking the same thing.
I just realized: If the tour immediately comes to Broadway right after, wouldn't RIO LIVE! be the pre-Broadway run/tour?
